"Physics holds truest in only the deadest universe, a space insulated or walled off from reality, with all complexity evacuated; or better, in the lifeless world of symbols scrawled across a whiteboard. Strangely when we manage to manufacture conditions approaching such temporary holes, physics itself becomes emergently complex, refusing to be what it ought, resisting controlled manipulation."

- words by Cameron Tonkinwise

Comissioned for 'Materialnonmaterial' by Todd Robinson, an essay titled 'Coppered Scale Layers' by Professor Cameron Tonkinwise explores the material entanglements that occur when artworks seek to respond analogically to observations of people and their equipment in a Quantum Science lab.

Meet the four speakers joining us to explore what happens when contemporary art meets quantum science 🔬

🔎 Todd Robinson () - Interdisciplinary artist
🔎 Dr Timothy Newman () - Experimental quantum physicist and sound artist
🔎 Dr John Bartholomew - Associate Professor of Experimental Quantum Science at the University of Sydney and Director of the Quantum Integration Laboratory
🔎 Dr Alice Motion () - Professor of Science and Culture at the School of Chemistry, University of Sydney

On Thursday 13 August, hear from these four speakers in conversation about the art-science intersection, experimentation and interdisciplinarity, foregrounded by Robinson’s experience undertaking ‘Artist in the Lab’ with Sydney Nano.

You don't want to miss this one - RSVP via link in bio 🔗

'Artist in the Lab' is part of the 2024-2026 Sydney Nano ArtHaus project at the Sydney Social Sciences and Humanities Advanced Research Centre (SSSHARC). It is supported by funding through the Sydney Nano Catalyst Scheme.

"Much like art making, experimental quantum science is experimental, improvisational, and based in materials and technological processes and what they afford." - Todd Robinson

Join us in the final days of 'Materialnonmaterial' for a discussion on artist Todd Robinson’s experience undertaking a 12-month artist residency at the Quantum Integration Laboratory at the University of Sydney Nanoscience Institute (Sydney Nano).

Panel Talk: Art Meets Quantum Science
🗓️ Thursday 13 August, 5-7:30pm
🎵 Followed by live music
🍴 Snacks & drinks provided

Presented in conversation with quantum scientists Dr John Batholomew and Dr Timothy Newman, and moderated by Professor Alice Motion, this talk will reflect on Robinson’s experience within the lab, exploring greater themes of experimentation and interdisciplinarity.

Stick around afterwards to explore the exhibition with refreshments and a live music performance in response to 'Materialnonmaterial' (more details coming soon).

Experience the technological acoustics of a quantum science laboratory with 'lab material,' a sound work created for Todd Robinson's 'Materialnonmaterial' by tim newman.
"A little-known feature of an experimental lab like ours is their unique soundscape. I spend my days surrounded by the regular whirring and buzzing of vacuum pumps, the click-clack of relays, and the chirps of confirmation or denial from pieces of equipment responding to remote signals — all set against the rhythmic, pulsing backdrop of a pulse tube cooler.

This work captures some of the feeling of working in a lab: sounds wax and wane as you walk from setup to setup, as you open and close doors, walk through the service corridors, fill tanks of liquid nitrogen, and run experiments. Field recordings taken over the last six months...loop and play against each other, fading in and out, and never quite repeating."

- words by tim newman

Visit us 10am-5pm Mon-Fri, or until 7pm on Thursdays, to be transported by the soundscape of the lab.

Join us as we delve into the "entangled relations between bodies, technologies, and materials" of the quantum science world in our upcoming Slow Looking Workshop 🔎

Slow Looking Workshop: Materialnonmaterial
🗓️ Thursday 6 August, 12-1pm
🎟️ Free, all welcome

In the quantum lab, scientific phenomena that cannot be directly perceived are produced, stabilised, and made legible. In 'Materialnonmaterial', artist Todd Robinson brings this investigation into the gallery - exploring imperceptable phenomena through the tangible and intangible materials of sculpture, textile and sound.

This workshop invites you to slow down and get up close and personal with the imperfections, calculations and materials that are produced when art meets quantum science.

UPCOMING EXHIBITION 🔬

‘Materialnonmaterial'
Todd Robinson
15 June-16 July

Exhibition Launch: Thursday 18 June, 5:30-8pm

A new body of work by Todd Robinson explores the relationship between art-making and experimental quantum science, drawing on a 12-month artist residency with the Quantum Integration Lab at the Sydney Nanoscience Institute.

Spanning multiple materials, sculptural and perceptual registers, 'Materialnonmaterial' foregrounds the entangled relations between bodies, technologies, and materials through which fragile, imperceptible phenomena become materially and sensorially felt.
