WORKSHOP | Introduction to RA Colour Printing

In this special hands-on workshop, you will learn the basics of RA colour printing from your own colour negatives. You will be guided by the expert printer, Sandy Barnard with over 40 years of experience collaborating and printing for most of Australia’s leading photographers and artists.

Wednesday 27 May on Zoom
Saturday 30 May at Sandy's studio in Sydney

Throughout this course, you will learn the basics of colour printing and be equipped with the necessary skills to successfully run your own contact sheets and make enlargements of your negatives. Prior experience and basic competency in darkroom printing from B&W negatives are required.

Please note: The location of the studio is in Sydney (Lane Cove), so all participants will need to make their own way to Sydney. This cost is not included in the workshop fee.

This class is limited to six participants only and will be exclusively available for photo access members - don't miss out! Sign up now: https://photoaccess.org.au/calendar/workshops/introduction-to-ra-colour-printing/

EXHIBITION

Mooncake World
Natalie Loos & Chanel Nguyen, curated by Lulu Xu

Now showing at photo access until 23 May.

“Artists Natalie Loos and Chanel Nguyen mined their lives—girlhood, the multiplicity of q***r Asian experiences and the cultural ephemera from their youth in order to create art that lives beyond the print. A natural evolution of their print issue Mooncake magazine, Mooncake World, curated by Lulu Xu, invites viewers into a capsule of their shared lineage and initial measure of self-expression.

“For their debut exhibition at photo access, Loos and Nguyen return to Ngunnuwal country (Canberra) where the artists initially tendered their process of collaboration—and the space where they had studied and lived. The city, earmarked with their post-adolescent years, is also the site of many of the shoots and stories hewn into the pages of Mooncake Zine. 18 months after the launch of their publication, the artists reunite here with the material architecture of the world they have created.”

- Excerpt from Karen Leong’s Mooncake World catalogue essay.

EXHIBITION OPENING

Mooncake World
Chanel Nguyen & Natalie Loos
Curated by Lulu Xu

6pm Thursday 16 April at photo access

Mooncake World is a physical embodiment of the 144-page photographic zine, Mooncake Zine (2024), expanded into an interactive multi-media exhibition. Through the lens of contemporary q***r Asian femininity, Mooncake World is a vivid time capsule of creativity shaped by nostalgia, girlhood and youth culture.

In an era of digital proliferation, Chanel Nguyen and Natalie Loos highlight the importance and intimacy of physical media throughout their work. By weaving together both artists’ unique styles, influences, and rich cultural background, Mooncake World invites viewers into its plush universe, offering a peek behind the curtain of the unapologetically stylish, youthful and feminine charm.

By enlarging, reframing and recontextualising the photoshoots in the zine, the exhibition allows viewers to experience the works on a larger scale, to fully soak into all of its content. Through an immersive installation of a teenage girl’s bedroom, the implicit artistic influences from the artists’ upbringing are brought to life – namely: tween popular culture from the 2000s/early 2010s, high-fashion magazine editorials and cinematic photography.

EXHIBITION OPENING

Nanuma
Karlina Mitchell

6pm Thursday 16 April at photo access

Nanuma means to think and remember – together. This body of work draws on that principle to reimagine the colonial photograph as a site of reflection, resistance, and renewal. Rather than accepting these images as fixed historical records, the works disrupt their authority and returns focus to the sitter – their presence and dignity. Through processes of reworking, reframing, and recontextualising archival imagery, the project invites viewers to confront the layered histories embedded within the frame. Nanuma proposes a collective act of remembering that is active rather than passive, opening space for dialogue and reinterpretation. By centring the perspectives of iTaukei people, this body of work transforms the colonial gaze into a platform for self-representation and cultural continuity. In doing so, it honours those depicted not as subjects of documentation, but as individuals whose stories, strength, and identities endure beyond the photograph.
