For ๐˜‹๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฉ ๐˜Š๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ง๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ, the exhibitionโ€™s central work, Muromtseva developed a unique animation technique, filming shadow puppets against illuminated, rotating plastic cylinders hand-drawn with scenes from the narrative. Over two years, she produced 44 transparencies and hundreds of drawings.
The process is remarkable not only for its precision, but also for the ideas it carries. A shadow is the most visible trace a body can leave, an undeniable sign of presence. At the same time, the shadow puppets recall Platoโ€™s allegory of the cave, which questions our ability to distinguish projection from reality.

This Sunday at NIKA Project Space, Paris ๐Ÿ’ก Katya Muromtsevaโ€™s ๐˜•๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ด opens this weekend โ€” a solo show built around the premiere of ๐˜‹๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฉ ๐˜Š๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ง๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ, a 30-minute animated shadow-puppet film sheโ€™s been making for several years.

The exhibition takes over darkened rooms filled with flickering silhouettes, shifting shadows, and drawings. Itโ€™s a space that sits somewhere between memory, dream, and bureaucratic absurdity โ€” familiar things made strange, identities that slip in and out of focus.

๐˜‹๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฉ ๐˜Š๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ง๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ follows a woman who returns to her home country after ten years away, only to find that, on paper, she doesnโ€™t exist anymore. Her journey unfolds through institutions, archives, and fragments of memory as she tries to find her way back into the official record โ€” and back into herself.

In anticipation of the May 31 opening of ๐˜•๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ด, our upcoming solo exhibition by Katya Muromtseva at NIKA Project Space, Paris, we share a first glimpse of several drawings from a larger body of works presented throughout the exhibition. Produced during the development of ๐˜‹๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฉ ๐˜Š๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ง๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ, the artistโ€™s new 30-minute animated shadow puppet film premiering in the exhibition, the drawings reference iconic imagery from art history. The works reflect Muromtsevaโ€™s practice of transforming space through the poetic language of drawing and painting while confronting social and political realities.

First created in 2011, ๐˜ž๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฆ ๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜ฑ dissolves borders into light โ€” a blank projection that loops through visibility and blur until geography itself disappears. Mirna Bamiehโ€™s video work imagines a world where boundaries, divisions and obstacles are swallowed into a white void, offering a vision of space without purpose, and a map that holds the sum of all possible maps.

Working with felt โ€” a material passed down through generations of her family โ€” Nagimova explores home as something mobile and mutable, shaped by migration, memory, and loss. Jort installations in white and black anchor the show, alongside video and wall works that spiral through ancestral ritual, Tatar script, and the quiet resilience of things that carry their shelter with them.

Ali Kaeiniโ€™s works explore how censorship and absence have shaped visual language and representations of intimacy in post-revolution Persian pop culture. Working with dyed fabric, bleach, ink, and laser-cut motifs drawn from Persian calligraphy and museum objects, Kaeini builds layered compositions where erased figures acquire a renewed presence.

In ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜“๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜“๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ (2026), he turns to the Iranian Lion and Sun symbol โ€” destabilizing it alongside cosmic motifs and an emoji-like star โ€” reflecting on how national symbols are stripped of historical depth over time. The Blue Girl shifts to the domestic interior, depicting a woman dancing before a mirror in a scene that recalls Vermeer in its attention to light, gaze, and the boundary between image and architecture.

Daniele Genadryโ€™s practice is not grounded in specific sites, though one might assume echoes of Lebanese terrain. The space of light and emptiness that permeates her work produces visual uncertainty: we look not at a landscape but at a flash of light. Light becomes the central subject rather than any figurative motif. This is a treatment of light sharply different from the Impressionistsโ€™ optics. Her world seems filtered, unreal, stripped of detail, more beautiful than reality, yet never an aestheticized illusion.
