An ivory field of crossing diagonal bands, octagonal rosettes and vase forms, drawn from the Kuba designs of the Caucasus. Shahsavan-region weavers took up the pattern and framed it with a red border of palmettes on a scrolling vine.

Kashmir, 1800s. Silver. H 16 cm. Bird feet, serpent handle, lions on the lid.

Its form traces back to the Greek askos, an oil vessel copied by Victorian silversmiths for claret jugs, and inspired again, the artisans of Kashmir.
