MOVING MASCULINITY is a film about memory, masculinity, race and emotional inheritance that weaves together poetry, sound, story and ceremony, and features men naming and examining loss, love, grief, vulnerability, loneliness, trauma, and everything they learned about becoming a man.

The screening will be followed by a conversation moderated by Lovelyn Nwadeyi.

SU Museum celebrates International Museum Month with two new exhibitions

To mark International Museum Month and International Museum Day (IMD) on 18 May 2026, Stellenbosch University Museum is hosting two new exhibitions, namely New Pathways and Maggie Laubser at 140.

The theme of this year’s IMD is Museums Uniting a Divided World. This theme, according to the International Council of Museums, highlights the role of museums in bridging social, cultural, and geographical divides.

New Pathways is a new exhibition showcasing the latest art acquisitions of the Stellenbosch University Museum. The new works cover the period from 2014 up to recent years, while the Maggie Laubser at 140 exhibition is a celebration of Maggie Laubser’s life and work.

Born on 14 April 1886, Laubser grew up in Malmesbury and died in 1973 at the age of 78. She attended boarding school at Bloemhof Girls’ Seminary in Stellenbosch, where she was introduced to the art of drawing.

Laubser is generally considered, along with Irma Stern, to be responsible for the introduction of Expressionism to South Africa.

In her last will and testament, Laubser bequeathed ‘all paintings in my house at the time of my death’ to Stellenbosch University, together with furniture and household effects, and the remainder of her estate and legacy to SU. This special relationship is reflected in the Maggie Laubser at 140 exhibitions.

The SU Museum is located at 52 Ryneveld Street, Stellenbosch. The Museum is open on Monday to Friday (09:00-16:00) and is closed on weekends and on public holidays.

New Pathways exhibition at Stellenbosch University Museum now open.

New Pathways is a new exhibition showcasing the latest art acquisitions of the Stellenbosch University Museum. The new works cover the period from 2014 up to recent years. This period coincides with the appointment of Bongani Mgijima as the first-ever Black African director of the Museum.

The New Pathways exhibition brings together recent acquisitions across painting, sculpture, photography, and mixed media. The exhibition features artworks by well-known and emerging artists. Visitors will have the opportunity to view many of these works that are exhibited together for the very first time.

Most works collected during the period were acquired mainly through donations, while a small number were purchased after the Museum hosted a blockbuster exhibition celebrating the centenary of Stellenbosch University in 2018.

The New Pathways exhibition is currently on until the end of the year. The Stellenbosch University Museum is located at 52 Ryneveld Street, Stellenbosch.

Stellenbosch University Museum is the winner of the Western Cape Ministerial Award for Promoting Social Cohesion (2017); the Cape Winelands District Municipality Mayoral Award for Sustainable Tourism (2018); and the Pan South African Languages Board Award for Multilingualism (2022).
