Since 2019, we have been building relationships with a group of local NGOs and NPOs. In this Outreach Programme, learners from local communities are taught the basic elements and principles of art and design through tailored theoretical classes and practical workshops.

Between June and July works created by learners from Vision Afrika, The Sustainability Institute, Legacy Community Development, Anna Foundation and Green Door Project were showcased. Each learner completed a series of creative worksheets and activities aimed at establishing a foundation in visual literacy. After completion of the theoretical component, learners visited the museum for an afternoon of fun and hands-on application of the knowledge gained, during which they completed a practical component.

Celebrating their creations, we proudly exhibited the artworks of the Grade R to Grade 6 learners. Visitors were encouraged to vote for their favourites with some rotations even inviting the viewer to draw and interact around the creations. From clouds, pirate ships and castles to more characters added, the creatures came alive in the scenes created.

Thank you to every visitor who voted. Now, we proudly announce the Visitor Favourites. Learners from these different institutions visited the museum for a special prizegiving on Saturday, 15 August, where they each received an art hamper and certificate.

Guided by Jade and May from Clay Atelier, you’ll learn three fundamental handbuilding techniques: pinching, slab building and coiling, to create your own unique ceramic pieces that will be fired afterwards.

This one is for the little ones! Join us on Thursday 16 July in making a wooden tower inspired by your favourite African animals.

Attendees will be exploring shapes, patterns and features found in animals they admire and love. The activities will include thinking about these animals symbolically and transforming them through drawing, cutting, pasting, and constructing.

The workshop takes inspiration from the artworks of South African artists like Cecil Skotnes, Sydney Kumalo and Hannes Harrs inspired by Africa and Inuk artists Kenojuak Ashevak and Kananginak Pootoogook, which will be shown and discussed as part of the creative process.
