Please join us for the opening of ‘CoreFIBRE (Memory Resides Here)’ - a solo exhibition by Elizabeth Miller-Vermeulen - on 13 June, 11:00 at GUS.

Miller-Vermeulen is an artist, independent curator, and alumnus of Stellenbosch University who is currently based in Somerset West. Her seventh solo exhibition, CoreFIBRE, explores concepts of memory and materiality through a multidisciplinary practice that includes drawing, painting, and assemblage.

According to the artist, this exhibition “considers meaning within objects, shapes, and surfaces, revealing and personal histories interwoven with collective forms of remembrance […] and reflects on the artworks as sites of temporal residue.”

Hear from curators Amy Rommelspacher () and Kathryn Smith () about how this project moved from first archival encounter to final installation.

Mark your calendars!

Our latest exhibition, ‘Place’, featuring new work by senior Fine Art students from Stellenbosch University, officially opens its doors next Thursday.

‘Place’ is the third instalment of the Art from Archives project where third year fine art students are exposed to collections in the Dutch Reformed Church Archives - culminating in an exhibition in their fourth year that showcases their inquiry and practice.

For this exhibition, students were presented with archival material concerning Afrikaners who emigrated to Chubut province in Argentina following the South African War, from 1902 onward.

Curators Amy Rommelspacher and Kathryn Smith note that this exhibition “grappled with describing, defining and discovering ‘place’” and poses questions such as “what does it mean to call a place home?” And “what are we willing to risk for a place?”

Join us for the opening event on Thursday, 26 March at 17:30 at GUS, corner of Bird & Dorp Streets.
