The protea seed, dormant until exposed to intense heat, becomes a recurring point of reference. Fire acts as initiator, threshold and release. The significance extends into what follows.

The presence of the dogs in the exhibition reiterates the duality of existence. Johnston’s engagement with contradiction is rooted in lived experience. Coming of age in late-1990s South Africa, she encountered a landscape marked by the promise of transformation, alongside the persistence of violence in lived experience that was reflected in public imagery. This dissonance prompted an inquiry into trauma and representation that continues to inform her practice.

The presence of the dogs reiterates the duality of existence. Johnston’s engagement with contradiction is rooted in lived experience.
