I recently popped by the studio of the Queen of emotive flowers, Ruschka du Toit. I was welcomed by these dark, moody blooms: A refreshing take on the still life, and one she has truly made her own.

Ruschka is self-taught and works mainly in ink, drawn to how unpredictable it is. I love how she finds beauty in the everyday and she asks us to stop and notice it too. Not everything can be controlled, but it can be magical nonetheless! What a mantra for life.

The young, vibrant Kagiso Reuben recently hand-delivered some new portraits. I love slotting them into a gallery wall - they add punch and a little bit of zing to a wall of landscapes and still life works.

Born in 1999 and raised in Vereeniging, Kagiso discovered he wanted to paint while studying photography at CityVarsity in Cape Town. His striking works, with their unconventional colour choices and quite provocative straight-in-the-eye looks, have since been shown with TheFourth, Eclectica Contemporary, Nel and Gallery2.

My dream placement would be his two same-sized portraits, Transparent and Sublime, hung side by side or one above the other.

Today we celebrate the wonderful Jackie Veldman and her work. And as it happens today is her birthday, so there’s no better reason to celebrate this wonderfully talented soul.

Jackie, who has been part of the Source Artistry family for years, paints flowers with a lightness that makes them feel freshly picked rather than posed. Her love of colour goes back to a childhood spent largely in Botswana, surrounded by nature at its most vivid. She first learned to make things in her mother’s ceramic studio, then studied and worked in interior design for several years before setting up her own studio in Cape Town.

Personally I’m wild about her colour combinations - vivid and interesting, often complementary shades that really pop!

Some behind-the-scenes footage from a recent studio visit to Ronel, or Petronella’s, new space in Hout Bay. This artist has gone from strength to strength, now creating these gorgeous abstracts featuring aesthetically pleasing colour combinations and beautiful strokes - also some welcome bigger sizes. I recently met the formidable Kurt Pio at his studio in town. Beyond his obvious talent, I learned that Kurt grew up with an aviary at home, and I think you can see it in the work. There is a patience in the way he looks at things - the kind you only learn by watching birds for hours as a child.

I was also struck by how versatile Kurt is. He doesn’t stick to one look, and his talent stretches well beyond the gemstones and bubbly bottles that earned him a global following and for which he is instantly recognised. Beyond his art, Kurt is a qualified milliner, having completed a course at the prestigious Central Saint Martins. Personally, I loved the crowns he made with some friends’ kids in his spare time. His talents seem to have no end!

My favourites are his landscapes, which have an edge to them - a certain je ne sais quoi beyond the expected landscape. These iconic scenes feel so fitting as we head into Heritage Day.

Wishing you a wonderful celebration of our country’s unique heritage tomorrow.

This magnificent Chloë Townsend creation recently found its forever home, now part of a renovation by Ashleigh from Kendall and Co.

Chloë’s leather creations need no introduction, enjoying a cult-like following, extending from bags to purses and my personal favourite her art. I find her vivid striking colour combinations, the unexpected and luxurious medium coupled with her often tongue in the cheek subject matters result in these masterful pieces that should be deemed an heirloom.

The inimitable Kevin Collins has sent lucky us some more of his magnificent work to share with you. Kevin, a Michaelis graduate, creates these wonderful stoneware portraits, with bucketloads of character and pizzazz. One can tell Kevin has done his time in advertising and brand consulting, creating these imaginative masterpieces as a full-time artist now.

Needless to say his statement walls of ceramics are fantastic, but an easy way of integrating them is to add them to a gallery wall, or above/below an artwork to create a little corner of joy.
