The Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens is the oldest and largest historic site open to the public in downtown Wilmington. Of eight colonial structures remaining in the city, four are located on this property; three stone buildings, circa 1744, that served as the city jail, and John Burgwin’s 1770 town house. Operated as a museum, the property offers visitors a unique opportunity to view one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in the state and to experience what life was like during pre-revolutionary Wilmington. All rooms have been restored to their original 1770 colors, and furnished with 18th century antiques, and showcase hundreds of remarkable objects.

• The visitor center, on the ground floor, houses a gift shop, art gallery and exhibit hall.

• The acre of Colonial style gardens consists of seven distinct areas, including an orchard with fig and pomegranate trees.

• A map of the gardens and its history facilitates complimentary self-guided tours of the beautiful property.

• The free-standing kitchen house, originally the jailor’s quarters, has a massive hearth and period cooking utensils.

• Last but not least, guided tours include the stories of the people who lived and worked here, and the NSCDA-NC, the women’s organization that saved this landmark from the wrecking ball.

Thank you to PBS North Carolina and Thalian Hall for partnering with us to host last night’s special screening of and discussion around PBS and director Lynn Novick’s upcoming documentary, “Crime and Punishment in America.” As the site of Wilmington’s first jail in 1744, we talk each day about the sensitive topics of colonial incarceration and America’s earliest practices of crime and punishment. We were happy to be able to provide that historical context to the discussion, while PBSNC also brought together other panelists from the academic, criminal justice, community engagement, and reentry services fields to talk about modern efforts of advocacy and opportunity. Thank you to everyone who joined us!

The holidays are fast approaching and there’s no such thing as donating too early! Now through December 15, please consider donating new, unwrapped toys to our Toys for Tots drive. So many will go without gifts this year, but you can help make sure they know someone is thinking of them. Our donation bin is located in our visitors center, open Monday through Saturday 10am to 4pm. Let’s make it a spectacular season of giving!

Fall is here, and we have a big weekend ahead for anyone who loves a local legend! Our Cape Fear Legends & Lore tours are back, with a walking tour on Friday and two river cruises on Saturday! Come learn all about the spooky and fascinating legends that have persisted for centuries in this region!

The walking tour starts at 9am on Friday at the Burgwin-Wright House, and tickets are $25. The rivers cruises will set sail Saturday at 10am and 12pm, departing with Wilmington Water Tours at 212 Water St. Tickets are $40, and ticket information for all tours is in the flyer above!

Thank you to the folks at Kings Mountain National Military Park for having us at their 246th annual commemoration today. It was incredible to be able to talk about Outlander’s impact on historic sites and its representation of the American Revolution, specifically the series finale’s focus on the Battle of Kings Mountain. Being able to walk the actual site of the 1780 battle with Ranger Robert Holmes and talk to guests about the events seen in the show was such a unique experience. Thank you to all who joined us!
