⚓ A room of your own or a bunk with 15 (or more) of your closest shipmates?
Space was at a premium aboard the USS NORTH CAROLINA, and where you slept depended on your rank.
These historic Navy photographs show two very different living arrangements aboard the Ship. A single stateroom offered a private berth, wardrobe, storage drawers, and even a rack for a sword.
The second photo shows a compartment on the third deck, between the cobbler and tailor shops (you can see it when you visit onboard!), that was converted into sleeping quarters for 16 sailors. With eight berths, shared space, lockers for personal belongings, and fans to help beat the heat, the sailors made the most of their accommodations. Look closely and you'll even spot two sailors catching some sleep!
With more than 2,300 men serving aboard during World War II, a little personal space went a long way.
Could you imagine sharing your sleeping quarters with a dozen or more other sailors?

Help celebrate Battleship North Carolina’s “Berth Day,” as we mark the 65th anniversary of the Battleship’s arrival in Wilmington. Performing the Sunday, October 18 concert will be the Wilmington Virtuosi Brass, a full British-style Brass Band featuring some of the best players in North Carolina. In April, the band was awarded second place in their division at the 2026 North American Brass Band Association Championships.

Tickets for A Musical Salute to the Battleship are free for Friends members (two free tickets per household) and $10 each for guests and non-members. The 2-hour performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. on the Battleship’s fantail.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, October 13, the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA will shine in blue and gold in honor of the 251st anniversary of the United States Navy.

As a ship built for service and preserved to share the stories of the nearly 9,000 sailors who served aboard her during World War II, and the 11,000 North Carolinians who made the ultimate sacrifice during the war, the Battleship is proud to join communities across the country in recognizing 251 years of U.S. Navy history.

Watch for the blue-and-gold illumination beginning at sunset.
