Tomorrow at sunset, the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA Memorial will be illuminated in recognition of Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States and honoring the resilience, contributions, and enduring legacy of African Americans throughout our nation's history.

Not every piece of World War II history comes in the form of an official photograph or report. This pen-and-ink sketch by Sgt. Hugh Robert Beck of the Marine detachment aboard USS NORTH CAROLINA (BB-55) depicts the battleship as a larger-than-life gladiator. Armed with her guns, shielding an aircraft carrier, and fueling a destroyer, the drawing captures the many roles the "Showboat" played during the war.

Part artwork, part humor, and part Marine perspective, this drawing is a fascinating example of how crew members interpreted the strength and versatility of America's most decorated World War II battleship.

☀️ Summer heat is nothing new—even Frank Haas (pictured) found a way to catch some shade during his time in the Pacific!

Aboard USS NORTH CAROLINA, ice cream wasn't just a favorite treat, it was a morale booster, a reward for outstanding performance, and even a tool for diplomacy at sea. The ship's ice cream plant could turn 2½ gallons of mix into 5 gallons of ice cream in just 15 minutes, helping supply sailors with one of the most anticipated items on the menu. Crewmembers enjoyed ice cream several times a week, while special occasions, competitions, and even visiting destroyers were often rewarded with an extra scoop.

A change of command aboard USS NORTH CAROLINA. This June 15, 1945 photograph shows Capt. Colclough and Capt. Byron H. Hanlon in the Captain’s cabin as Hanlon prepared to relieve Colclough as commanding officer of BB-55 during the closing months of World War II.
