Cape Fear Museum Preserving the history, science and cultures of the Lower Cape Fear. A New Hanover County agency. Over the years, the Museum has grown and changed.

Cape Fear Museum of History and Science's founding collection dates to 1898. It began collecting confederate relics, and now collects images and artifacts that help us understand the history, science and cultures of the region and is the regional science center for school groups and families. Cape Fear Museum is a department of New Hanover County.

But with this brand-new chapter for Cape Fear Museum ๐Ÿ›๏ธ, comes brand new programming! ๐ŸŽ‰ Our education team has been hard at work ๐Ÿ’ช researching, planning, and preparing new programs, even if that means running to test the new speed radar! ๐ŸƒWe know it's Summer โ˜€๏ธ and most kids are still in vacation mode ๐Ÿ–๏ธ, but we can't wait to welcome back students from all over and we're excited to see those school buses ๐ŸšŒ parked outside again!

Sloth Week 2.0 continues as our team is hard at work carefully reconstructing this Giant Ground Sloth replica! Did you know, this sloth was found off Randall Parkway and the excavation resulted in TWO skeletons that were more than 50% complete! ๐Ÿฆด A rare find in paleontology. Hereโ€™s a closer look at the dream team in action! ๐Ÿ™ŒTurns out, building a giant ground sloth is a real joint effort. ๐Ÿ˜„

After an extra day of well-deserved rest this holiday weekend, our incredible exhibits and curatorial team have officially kicked off the process of reassembling Wilmington's favorite prehistoric animal! ๐Ÿ™Œ But wait... things are a little different this time around! ๐Ÿ‘€ Our Giant Ground Sloth will be making its grand return at our Grace Street Campus!
