Cape Fear Museum Preserving the history, science and cultures of the Lower Cape Fear. A New Hanover County agency. Over the years, the Museum has grown and changed.

Cape Fear Museum of History and Science's founding collection dates to 1898. It began collecting confederate relics, and now collects images and artifacts that help us understand the history, science and cultures of the region and is the regional science center for school groups and families. Cape Fear Museum is a department of New Hanover County.

🔢 Math Madness, ⚡Forces & Motion, 🌦️ Weather Wonders, and 🐊 Cape Fear Wild. These are just a few of the incredible field trip programs schools have been able to book in the past. But with this brand-new chapter for Cape Fear Museum 🏛️, comes brand new programming! 🎉 Our education team has been hard at work 💪 researching, planning, and preparing new programs, even if that means running to test the new speed radar! 🏃We know it's Summer ☀️ and most kids are still in vacation mode 🏖️, but we can't wait to welcome back students from all over and we're excited to see those school buses 🚌 parked outside again!

Throwback to our EPIC Dino-Mighty Day 2023! 🤯🎉 We were absolutely blown away by the sea of dino enthusiasts who showed up!🙌🔥There is no better feeling than watching curiosity and excitement collide! 💥 And let's be honest… this day made one thing crystal clear: WE NEEDED A BIGGER HOME! 😂🏠➡️🏟️😊🦕

And just like that. A giant reborn. A 20ft tall Eremotherium eomigrans!🙌 And though it may look like a dinosaur, 🦕 this beautiful mammal only went extinct around 10,000 years ago…long after the dinosaurs. ⏳ Thanks to the amazing efforts of our curatorial and exhibits team, the Giant Ground Sloth lives again…if only in replica. 🤩💪 We hope you enjoyed yet another exclusive look into what you will soon be able to experience on your own! 🎟️🏛️ Sloth Week 2.0 is coming to a close.

Sloth Week 2.0 continues as our team is hard at work carefully reconstructing this Giant Ground Sloth replica! Did you know, this sloth was found off Randall Parkway and the excavation resulted in TWO skeletons that were more than 50% complete! 🦴 A rare find in paleontology. Here’s a closer look at the dream team in action! 🙌Turns out, building a giant ground sloth is a real joint effort. 😄

After an extra day of well-deserved rest this holiday weekend, our incredible exhibits and curatorial team have officially kicked off the process of reassembling Wilmington's favorite prehistoric animal! 🙌 But wait... things are a little different this time around! 👀 Our Giant Ground Sloth will be making its grand return at our Grace Street Campus! Brand new window, brand new home, brand new plan, and can’t forget the sloth week swag! 🪟🏛️✨Are you ready?! 🎉 SLOTH WEEK 2.0 IS HERE!
