Dorothy Gillespie (1920-2012) was well known as a painter, sculptor, and installation artist whose work pioneered joyful new directions for metal sculpture and is best known for large-scale, colorfully painted arrangements of cut aluminum strips that radiate, undulate, or curl like giant arrangements of ribbon, enchanted towers, or bursting fireworks.

Dorothy also held strong ties to Wilmington! Currently Wilmington holds the largest collection of her work in the US. The Gallery has the honor of working with the foundation to bring new works to the gallery! Stop by and see the newest arrivals from small pastels to larger pieces.

Join us in Mayfaire by 5pm today as we celebrate the esteemed creations of Chapel Hill photographer Catharine Carter, Atlanta-based painter James P. Garrett & the aluminum color bursts of Dorothy Gillespie (1920-2012)! 🎉

Catharine's dreamlike, narrative photomontages are paired with James P. Garrett's dedication to the historical practice of Venetian plaster - each work layered and polished to an incomparable, silky feel. Together, Catharine & James combine their unique artistic focuses to reimagine influences both natural and nebulous. 🪶

Meanwhile, the Dorothy M. Gillespie Foundation has delivered our grandest selection of Gillespie sculptures yet! Released from the artist & educator's studio in Narrowsburg, NY, absorb Dorothy's vibrant designs together in two & three dimensions. 🎇

Meet our artists during today's reception, alongside special refreshments and enjoy live music by jazz guitarist Roger Davis! These exhibits will be on display through September 13 - alongside a renewed selection from our gallery artists! 🌺

This Sunday from 2-5pm, we'll celebrate three nationally recognized artists here in Wilmington, NC! 🎉

Painter, James P. Garrett, based in West Jefferson, NC & photographer/mixed media artist, Catharine Carter based in Chapel Hill, NC are unveiling their unique artistic processes through our featured exhibit, "Imagining and Reimagining"! While James has dedicated his artistic career to the Venetian plaster pigments of antiquity, Catherine crafts fantasy narratives through her multimedia photomontages. Together, their works transport you through history, space, and hue. 📸

Their works will be paired with new works from the Dorothy M. Gillespie Foundation! In collaboration with Gary Israel Gillespie, son of Dorothy M. Gillespie (1920-2012), we're proud to present a new selection of sculptures from Dorothy's New York studio - bigger, bolder, and brighter than ever! See Dorothy's hand-bent aluminum up-close this Sunday, with live music by Roger Davis, special refreshments, and a chance to meet our local Gallery Artists! 🎨

In Mayfaire, we're featuring the incredible local scenes of painter Joanne Geisel in her exhibit, "Perspectives"! Join us in Mayfaire Town Center from now until 5pm to view Joanne's remaining impressionistic coastlines, vibrant reflections, and a new selection of abstract interpretations! 🏞️

Closer to downtown? Drop by ACME Art Studios (711 N. 5th Ave), where painter Dick Roberts' open studio is filled with large, expressive abstracts - home to intensities of color and textures unique to Dick's processes. Explore the breadth of Dick's career through his works, alongside the studios of ACME's 20+ working artists. 🎨
