Waterford Historical Museum and Cultural Center Connecting you to Waterford's vibrant past...

The Waterford Historical Museum and Cultural Center is located in the 1830 Hugh White Homestead. In 1964, this Greek Revival mansion was scheduled for demolition. However, a group of citizens rallied to save the house and move it from Saratoga Avenue to its present location overlooking the Mohawk River and the old Champlain Canal. The Waterford Historical Museum and Cultural Center features a permanent exhibition about the history of Waterford, temporary exhibitions related to local history, a Victorian period room, and the George and Annabel Oโ€™Connor Library for Local History.

9 hikes to see dazzling waterfalls in Upstate NY

Technically this list is for waterfalls to see while hiking so it makes sense Cohoes Falls might not be lumped in as a "hiking" destination. Still, at a height of 90ft, the "Niagara of eastern New York" (NYS DEC website) is a cultural landmark for the native Iroquois and remained a major obstacle for travel on the Mohawk River up until the alternative water route of the Erie Canal. There's always Peebles Island State Park that's nearby with its own waterfalls, although they're not quite as roaring as the Cohoes Falls can be at times. What are some of your favorite places to enjoy the outdoors near Waterford?

A steam engine created by the Button Fire Engine Works and owned by the Knickerbocker Steamer Co. was brought out for their 125th Anniversary in 1937. This fire company first was known as the Protection Engine Company No. 1 but officially changed to Knickerbocker in 1847. There was an emphasis on the "o" spelling to differentiate between the Dutch Knickerbocker family and John Knickerbacker, who was a resident of the village. It became the Knickerbocker Steamer Co. in 1865 by acquiring this engine. The steamer was originally named after Village president, D.B.King, but resumed its "Knickerbocker" name in 1874.

A Henry Troemner scale, missing one of its ceramic plates but it has an assortment of plastic grapes glued to the remaining one... Henry was a German-American who began his business in 1844 in Philadelphia. His scales were likely the first to incorporate the design of having the load superimposed on the beam rather than suspended from the beam as was popular at the time. This meant for faster weighing (6 lb. capacity on this example) and so it's no surprise that it probably was in one of the many stores in Waterford.

#Volunteer We're looking for some volunteers to help with directions. It always comes down to location with anything, huh? Volunteers are needed to help students at this field trip get to and from the different locations along the old Champlain Canal Trail, Lock 2 and the Hurst Visitors Center for their exploration of the canal & Waterford, NY! Our leaders aren't teaching, just directing groups. Let us know if you're up for the 9:30am to 1:30pm Mon-Fri walk along the canal this coming June 10 - June 14th.

We're always looking to find ways to expand what the museum has to offer and share the rich history of Waterford, NY. Thanks to Nicole Mahoney for inviting WHMCC to discuss with others our goals and opportunities for visitors and volunteers to be involved with us as a community effort.

At the 2019 Museum Association of New York Annual Conference, Nicole had the opportunity to speak with representatives of fascinating historic and cultural destinations. In this episode of Destination on the Left, youโ€™ll meet Julia Fell, Assistant Curator of Bethel Woods Center for the Arts; Natalie Shoemaker, Marketing and Events Coordinator of Roberson Museum and Science Center; Jessica Moquin, Executive Director of Chenango County Historical Society and Museum; and Anastasia Garceau, Director of Waterford Historical Museum and Cultural Center. Listen and learn how each is making remarkable efforts toward greater inclusivity.

Sometimes there is a question of "Why does the museum have this item?" when looking at the museum collection. No background information was given on this item when donated in 1967. It looks like a typical native American statue from any cigar store, making it hard to place to a specific location. Does this look familiar to anyone for a Waterford-specific store?
