Childe Hassam was a pioneer of American Impressionism and perhaps its most devoted, prolific, and successful practitioner. The painting we present today is one of the finest of a series of works that the artist made during summers in the 1890s on Appledore Island, one of the Isles of Shoals, in the state of Maine. This series portrays the sumptuous wildflower garden cultivated by his friend, poet Celia Thaxter, a garden that provided a marvelous contrast to the rugged terrain of the island itself.

Jonas Peterson best known for his wedding portraits, is recently behind the stunning project that invaded social media in the last months. He is the idea behind “Youth is wasted on the young”.

"Was to celebrate the so called old, a comment on ageism if you want. A positive quiet homage to people who’ve seen more than us, been there, done that and I wanted their confidence and pride to be seen. I used fashion to show off their personalities, their attitude and inner rebels shining through the facade of age. I’m a photographer and interested in both styling and fashion, but these aren’t photos and the clothes are not real. Instead I’ve used artificial intelligence to create the scenes, the people and what they’re wearing."

It’s Geeks Night Out on the last Friday of February
Shop. Dine. Explore with your inner geek in Downtown Troy

TROY, N.Y. — This month Troy Night Out celebrates all thinks “Geek” while shopping, dining and exploring Downtown Troy! Get out and about on Friday, February 28th to support local and explore small businesses in Troy from 5:00pm to 9:00pm and beyond.

February’s Troy Night Out honors hobbies, interests, discoveries and inventions with “Geeks Night Out” welcoming you to Downtown Troy during this Winter month. Meet your local entrepreneurs, enjoy the unique spaces the city has to offer, and get to learn, share and meet like-minded enthusiasts. We are all geeks at heart.

Downtown Troy kicks-off with the grand opening of Rose Hair & Healing. Their new single chair “speakeasy” salon welcomes guests with libations, cuts and weirdo make-up. Weathered Wood shares the same space, filling it with gorgeous driftwood arbors, furniture and lights. The small business owners are creative and driven in the district. The celebration continues at “Artcentric Tardis,” photographs and beads at Artcentric Marketplace. Creativity and knowledge is as good as the people you surround yourself with. 518 Prints calls all clothing geeks, sneakerheads and aspiring designers for their Brand Networking Night. Bring ideas and get feedback on custom screen printing, promotional merchandising and the beginning stages of business. “The Way We Work(ed)” a collaborative exhibition with the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street Program, opens at the Hart Cluett Museum. See how technology has impacted work for over 200 years in Rensselaer County.

Troy Night Out brings you back to the past and also to galaxies far, far away. Stop by FunCycled from 7-8pm for a photo op with a New Hope Stormtrooper. Slidin' Dirty Troy’s force is also strong for this Troy Night Out. They already have the tiki mugs, the owner with his Star Wars tattoos, and expect a cocktail from Baby Yoda paired with a Mando Sando. If you forgot to wear your “geek” t-shirt, Troy Cloth & Paper has made-in-Troy Tron, Batman 518 and Star Wars shirts. Wear it to Manory's an ensure your special Geeks Night Out discount on half-priced beers and geeky cocktails like Kahl Drinko Mimosa (Game of Thrones) and The Rick Sanchez Blue Drink (Rick and Morty).

Games galore throughout downtown! 1st Playable Productions makes great games and loves what they do. Stop by their studio for VR demonstrations, video games and fun activities for kids and adults. Pick up some truly retro and contemporary video games at Pastime Legends Video Games after dining on similar themed food and drink offered in true geek chic fashion at Bard & Baker Board Game Café. Burrito Burrito will give out a free arcade game play for Franklin Alley Social Club. Take home a puzzle (10% off) from Pause Gallery. Play into the night at Aquilonia Comics, Cards & More with Magic the Gathering or peruse their comic books, board games and more.

Inspiration is everywhere. Divine Sisterhood, NY presents a workshop based on ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ to renew the spirit, stimulate your brain, touch your heart and muster the courage for change. Superior Merchandise Company digs deep with the return of their Vinyl Club. For art nerds and collectors, Martinez Gallery welcomes the opening reception of “Re-install,” and Clement Art Frame Shop & Gallery’s “Annual Winter into Spring Sale” offers affordable works for all budgets. Wine enthusiasts will enjoy Hudson-Chatham Winery Troy's ‘Guess the Grape’ game with a mystery tasting. Guess it correctly and receive 10% off a purchase. Brown's Brewing Company challenges their bartenders, Jocks vs. Nerds; who will sell more. Enjoy the soundtrack of ‘Revenge of the Nerds’ at Nighthawks while ending the night with farm-to-table food and crafted drinks. More music can be found just outside of the downtown district at Oakwood Community Center. ‘Funkamania: A Night of Music & Art’ featuring Doc Horton and the Jay Street Band and artwork by Amy Modesti. This is just a sampling of the many happenings downtown. We welcome all to shop, dine and explore through to the geeky night.

Visit downtown Troy on Friday, February 28th and the last Friday of every month for Troy Night Out, taking place from 5:00pm to 9:00pm and beyond.
