Felicito a la Villa del Capitán Correa San Felipe de Arecibo en sus 500 años. Sería maravilloso que los arecibeños se comprometan a trabajar para que la ciudad recobre su esplendor de antaño. Hay tantos edificios abandonados que son unas verdaderas joyas arquitectónicas y que merecen ser restaurados. No son estorbos públicos por favor. Arecibo era una gran ciudad y puede volver a serlo. Exhorto a todos los arecibeños a conservar y proteger celosamente su patrimonio cultural y arquitectónico, que es su mayor tesoro.

La “Adoración de los Reyes Magos” es una de las principales obras del período de juventud de Velázquez, habiéndola pintado con veinte años. Realizada en Sevilla, el pintor convirtió esta reconocible escena religiosa en una celebración familiar. Para ello, situó el retrato de su suegro y maestro, Francisco Pacheco, en rostro del rey Melchor, su autorretrato en el del rey Gaspar y el de su esposa, Juana Pacheco, en el de la Virgen María, que sostendría en sus brazos a la hija de ambos, Francisca, nacida el mismo año en el que se pintó esta obra. Este tipo de adaptaciones de las escenas religiosas fue habitual en el contexto de la Contrarreforma, y especialmente apoyado por los Jesuitas, que promovieron la actualización de la historia religiosa con referencias cercanas para facilitar su comprensión.

En esta época, la pintura de Velázquez se caracteriza por una utilización de la luz algo tenebrista, generando efectos de claroscuro, y la presencia de colores marrones, generalmente oscuros debido a la “tierra de Sevilla” que utilizaba para la preparación del lienzo.
