NEW: DPS announces the expansion of the Texas Rangers’ Cold Case Program – a specialized unit dedicated to solving cold case murders and sexual assaults. 🧬🔎

Last year, DPS was allocated funding by the Texas Legislature to support additional Texas Ranger positions under the program, doubling its size statewide. These Rangers identify and arrest criminals who, sometimes for many years, have believed they’ve gotten away with some of the most heinous crimes. Since 2001, they’ve helped solve more than 300 cold cases. As forensic science and technology continue to advance, so will their ability to hold more criminals accountable.

We are saddened to announce that historian and friend Dr. T. Lindsay Baker was killed in a car crash on Route 66 in Arizona on Thursday, while participating in the Route 66 Centennial Caravan as a Texas representative. Dr. Baker was driving his beloved 1930 Ford Model A “woody” station wagon in the caravan. The historic vehicle had already completed four previous Route 66 journeys, reflecting Lindsay’s lifelong dedication to preserving and celebrating the legacy of America’s Main Street.

Dr. Baker wrote over 20 books, many dedicated to all aspects of Texas history. “Gangster Tour of Texas” is one of his many works that is in our library collection for its inclusion of Texas Rangers. In 1987 he was named a Fellow of the Texas State Historical Association in recognition of the depth and breadth of his contributions to the historical record. Dr. Baker was 79 years old.

The Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum extends its deepest condolences to the Baker family during this difficult time.

Construction along the riverwalk continues, and we get a front-row view of the equipment being used.

The Riverwalk Redevelopment Project will enhance the riverfront experience by reconstructing a trail, installing new lighting and landscaping, and improving gathering and viewing areas along the Brazos River. These upgrades support continued investment and improvements within Waco’s downtown riverfront district.

Construction is estimated to be completion in January 2028. If you have questions about the project, please contact the City of Waco Parks and Recreation Department at 254-750-5980.
