“Sea Monsters Unearthed” transports you 70 million years back in time to the ancient waters of the South Atlantic—where massive marine reptiles ruled.

This extraordinary exhibition brings to life a groundbreaking fossil site along the rugged coast of Angola, where an international team of scientists uncovered a missing chapter in Earth’s history. Three Million Reasons to Celebrate!

This month, the Mayborn reached an incredible milestone—we welcomed our 3 millionth visitor! 🦣

To celebrate, our lucky guest was surprised with a special prize package that included a Family Membership, a birthday party package, a private behind-the-scenes tour, and guest passes to share with family and friends.

🐢🌊 Sea turtles have been part of ocean ecosystems for over 150 million years and still swim along Angola’s coast today. The Angolachelys mbaxi is the South Atlantic’s oldest species of sea turtle.

Like some modern sea turtles, it used the flat surface of its strong jaws to crush hard-shelled prey.

Explore prehistoric sea turtles and their fossils in our“Sea Monsters Unearthed” exhibition on view now at the Mayborn Museum Complex (part of our Smithsonian Affiliations).

“Sea Monsters Unearthed” explores the period when Africa and South America—continents that once fit together like puzzle pieces—split apart and “sea monsters” like mosasaurs and plesiosaurs lurked in the newly formed waters of the South Atlantic Ocean. The exhibition showcases never-before-seen fossils from excavations sites in Angola that fill in a missing chapter in Earth’s history.
