Built in 1829, the Gorgas House was the first structure to be built on the University of Alabama campus, and was one of only four buildings to survive the Civil War campus burning in 1865. The home was originally built as a steward's hall (hotel) and dining facility for university students. In the 1840's the building was renovated into a faculty residence. It is one of four buildings that survived

the burning of the campus by the Union Army in 1865 still standing today. The Gorgas family lived in the home from 1879-1953 and oversaw the University's hospital and post office inside their home. The residence is now a house museum with collections of antiques and Gorgas family memorabilia.

On the anniversary of Clara Maass' death, Sonya Harwood-Johnson (Director, Gorgas House Museum) tells the story of the nurse who gave her life to heal those around her and save the lives of millions.

The "Clara Maass: She Gave Her Life" exhibit at the Gorgas House Museum will run through September 25, 2026 and was researched by Caroline Meyerhoff (Bachelors of Arts in History, Class of 2029), designed by Hannah Spencer (Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science, 2026), and made possible by donations from Mr. Ron Howard.

Thanks to everyone who came to Super Soaker Capture the Flag at the Gorgas House! In connection with our “Made in America” exhibit that highlights inventions made in the United States every decade, this UA student-only event celebrated the creation of the Super Soaker, right here in Alabama! Invented by Tuskegee Alum and NASA scientist Lonnie Johnson in 1989, this iconic toy has been a staple in summer fun ever since. Also, a huge thank you to Big Al and UAPD officer Austero with K-9 Lynka for joining in the Super Soaker excitement!

It was a hot , but The Gorgas House Museum offered The University of Alabama students the chance to enjoy cold drinks! Students could make freshly squeezed and customizable lemonade and interact with the Paul W. Bryant Museum and the Alabama Museum of Natural History to learn about student opportunities with UA Museums.
