Maker Monday: Mark Andrus

This week for Maker Monday, we’re featuring Mark Andrus, a talented local woodturner with a lifelong love of working with wood.

Mark has enjoyed woodworking throughout his life, but woodturning is his true passion. He believes that he loves wood, and it loves him back. His work celebrates the natural beauty, character, and unique qualities found in every piece of wood.

You can meet Mark and see his work at our September Artist Showcase on Saturday, September 5, from 2:00–4:30 PM. Mark will be demonstrating woodturning on his lathe, weather permitting, and sharing more about his craft.

Meet the Artist: Mary Chesnik

We are excited to welcome Mary Chesnik, a talented fiber artist whose work is inspired by her lifelong connection to Long Lake and the beauty of nature.

Mary has spent almost every summer of her life along the shores of Long Lake, a place that holds a special place in her heart. After nearly 30 years of quilting, she shifted from traditional quilts and wall hangings to creating small art quilts inspired by nature.

Mary uses carefully selected pieces of fabric, blending colors and textures to create beautiful scenes of skies, water, and the natural world. Fine tulle and machine quilting hold the fabrics in place, while raw edge appliqué adds detail and dimension.

Her love of finding unique fabrics has even become a hobby of its own! We are also excited to share that Mary’s artwork was recently featured in Quilting Arts Magazine in their Summer 2026 issue.

Maker Monday: Jim Roe

This week for Maker Monday, we’re featuring Jim Roe, a longtime Traverse City resident and talented Leather Art artist.

Jim moved to Traverse City with his parents in 1958 and returned to his passion for working with leather after retiring. He creates what he calls “Leather Art,” using vegetable tanned leather as his canvas.

With a rawhide mallet and specialized tools, Jim carefully presses and molds detailed images into the leather. He then adds embossing, leather stain, and acrylic paint to bring each piece to life.

For Jim, the creative process is deeply meaningful. Each piece is made with care and reflects the personal connection he feels to his craft.

Meet the Artist: Patsy Keipper

We are excited to welcome Patsy Keipper, fiber artist and founder of Possibilities By Patsy, to Long Lake Gallery and Gifts!

After retiring from a career in teaching, Patsy turned her lifelong passion for sewing into a creative business. She designs and crafts handmade bags using leather, canvas, cotton, and other textiles.

Living on Long Lake with her husband, Steve, Patsy draws inspiration from the textures, colors, and endless possibilities of fabric. Her work combines thoughtful design with beautiful craftsmanship to create unique, functional pieces.

We are thrilled to have Patsy’s handmade creations in the gallery and look forward to sharing her work with you!

Maker Monday: Chuck McLaughlin

This Maker Monday, we’re highlighting Chuck McLaughlin, a talented woodturner whose creativity shines through in every piece he makes.

After retiring from teaching in 2004, Chuck and his wife moved to Traverse City, where they built a log home and ran a bed and breakfast before turning their attention to new pursuits.

Chuck has always enjoyed working with wood, but woodturning became his true passion. He creates beautiful bowls, platters, hollow form vessels, charcuterie boards, and more. He also incorporates pyrography, resin, stone, carving, color, and piercing techniques to make each piece truly unique.

Meet Chuck on Saturday, September 5! Chuck will be at Long Lake Gallery and Gifts from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM during our September Artist Demonstration Day. Stop by to meet Chuck, ask questions, and hear him talk about his work and creative process.

Yesterday's August Artist Demonstration Day was a wonderful success!

It was great to see so many familiar faces and meet new visitors. We hope you enjoyed watching our talented artists share their creative process, asking questions, and experiencing art being made right before your eyes.

A special shoutout to Andrea Thompson, Donna McDermott, Marsha Gresso, and Danielle Smith for spending the day demonstrating their work and sharing their creativity with everyone who stopped by.

We're also grateful to Music by Gael, our last-minute addition, whose live music made the event even more special.

We loved seeing everyone enjoy the lemonade, cookies, and lavender sachets, and we're so appreciative of everyone who came out to support local artists and Long Lake Gallery & Gifts!
