CANDLES is an acronym for Children of Auschwitz N**i Deadly Lab Experiments Survivors. The CANDLES organization was founded in 1984 by Eva Mozes Kor with help from her twin sister, Miriam Mozes Zieger, to launch an effort to locate other surviving Mengele twins. As a result of their efforts, Eva and Miriam were able to locate 122 individual Mengele twins living in ten countries and four continents

. In 1995, Eva opened the CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Terre Haute. In 2003, the museum was firebombed by an arsonist and burned to the ground. With support from the community and organizations, a new museum building opened in 2005 and remains an important part of the community today. The museum draws increasing numbers of visitors every year, many coming from long distances.

In 2017, Eva Mozes Kor was honored as the Grand Marshal of the Indianapolis 500 Festival Parade - a remarkable recognition of her courage, resilience, and lifelong commitment to education, forgiveness, and human rights.

From meeting Nikki Sixx (of the heavy metal band Mötley Crüe) to dancing with Pacers basketball star Scot Pollard, these photos capture just some of the special moments from that weekend. Special thanks to Ted Green for some of the photos.

We are proud to carry forward Eva’s legacy every day at CANDLES.

Today marks ! 31 years ago, Eva Kor founded CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center. Our museum has continued to stand on her mission and carry on her legacy of hope, healing, respect, and responsibility.

This year’s theme for International Museum Day, led by the International Council of Museums, is “Museums Uniting a Divided World.” We could not think of a better topic to focus on during these times of rising hate and division. Everyday we share Eva’s story and that of the Holocaust to help create a harmonious world based on peace. We encourage you to visit CANDLES, and museums around the world, to explore and learn from diverse histories and cultural heritage.

Congratulations to the Class of 2026! 🎓

As graduates begin the next chapter of their journey, we are reminded of Eva Kor’s lifelong belief in the power of education, perseverance, and resilience.

In 1990, Eva Mozes Kor graduated from Indiana State University with a bachelor’s degree in General Studies/English after attending classes for more than a decade - all while managing her real estate career and building CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center.

Her story is a powerful reminder that it is never too late to pursue your goals and that determination can overcome even the greatest obstacles.

Eva was later honored with ISU’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2017, a testament to her extraordinary impact on education, human rights, and the world.

To all graduates: keep learning, keep growing, and never underestimate the difference one person can make.
