President Reagan spoke at the swearing in ceremony for the Archivist of the United States Don Wilson at the National Archives. In Reagan's speech he said, “But if we're to succeed in the future, we must learn our own past and learn to look at these and other documents and hear the echoes and sense the greatness and draw strength. For to study American history is, in a sense, to study free will.” .

Happy American Archives Month!
As the first presidential library and museum to operate under the Presidential Records Act of 1978, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library & Museum holds over 65 million of President Reagan's presidential documents and personal collections. These records, held by the U.S. government on behalf of the American people, are preserved and made accessible to the public by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).
NARA archivists are trained specialists in preserving and providing access to original materials, including paper, photos, maps, films, and digital records. With backgrounds in museums, archives, or history, they have deep knowledge of records throughout their life cycle. Their research and analysis skills ensure long-term preservation and availability for all Americans.

The Reagan Library honors the life and legacy of iconic artist, Peter Max, who passed away on September 14, 2026. In 1981, Peter Max was invited by President Reagan and Mrs. Reagan to a Fourth of July Celebration on the South Lawn of the White House. There, Max painted six, 8-foot-tall paintings of the Statue of Liberty.
Peter Max also played a critical role in the Statue of Liberty restoration project. In 1982, President Reagan announced a Liberty-Ellis Island Commission for the restoration of the statue that culminated in a re-dedication ceremony on “Liberty Weekend,” July 3-6, 1986.
