Joel and Frances McCrea Ranch Foundation Visitors are welcome to scheduled events at the beautiful ranch owned by actor Joel McCrea Welcome to the Joel and Frances McCrea Ranch Foundation page.

In the early 1930’s actor Joel McCrea, based on advice from close friend and mentor Will Rogers who suggested it would be a good idea to have something to fall back on in case acting didn't work out, bought and established a working ranch in the Santa Rosa Valley area of Ventura County, California. Joel and his wife of 57 years, actress Frances Dee, built their home here and raised their three boy

s in this wonderful and unique environment. The McCrea's loved the area and for many years were active members of the local community and supported many local causes. In the late 1950’s and early 1960’s parts of the ranch were sold for housing, which now makes up much of the northern third of the city of Thousand Oaks, CA. Today there are approximately 280 acres left of the original ranch. After Joel’s passing in 1990 and wishing to preserve what was left, in 1995 the McCrea family put together an agreement with the Conejo Recreation and Park District enabling the District to acquire the property. All the buildings on the ranch have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places and are being preserved for eventual sharing with the public. The Conejo Recreation and Park District, in conjunction with members of the McCrea family, has completed the construction of a new visitor’s center that is now open during scheduled events and programs. While there is much being done to preserve the history of the ranch and its famous owners, there remain a great number of items that need to be done in order to keep a series of 80 to 100+ year old buildings and their surroundings maintained. There are several pressing projects that need to be undertaken in order to retain the beauty and function of the ranch. The Joel and Frances McCrea Ranch Foundation was formed in order to assist in the fundraising efforts needed to maintain a facility of this nature. The primary mission of this Foundation is to honor and preserve the legacy of Joel and Frances McCrea by raising and managing funds to support the Conejo Recreation and Park District in the restoration, preservation and rehabilitation, as well as the interpretive and educational programs of the Joel and Frances McCrea Ranch. The 2026 Cowboy Cookout was a Sold-Out Success!

Cowpokes from all over the county and as far away as Prescott, Arizona, donned their best bib and tucker and headed to the McCrea Ranch on Saturday May 16 for its annual Cowboy Cookout.

Docent-led tours of the main house were among the highlights, as this is one of the few occasions that guests may visit . Of course, tours of the Shop, Bunk House and Milk House, were included too.

A professional roper shared his skills with the group, and many tested their own abilities. Musical entertainment enhanced the pleasant afternoon breeze, and a lively auction and raffle helped raise some of the funds needed for renovation. And what would a cookout be without the delicious barbeque faire?

Guests learned about plans for the 100th Anniversary in 2033, and a matching grant provided by CRPD to get many major renovations completed. The Ranch needs to raise $450,000 on its own, so be on the lookout for more events. As always, donations to the McCrea Ranch Foundation are always welcome as we work toward this monumental fundraising goal.

All in all, it was a lovely evening at the ranch. Thank you to everyone who came out, and Happy Trails until we meet again soon!

On Sunday, December 7, the McCrea Docents were treated to a wonderful holiday luncheon--and the famous McCrea Bingo Game -- to thank them for their hard work all year long. The McCrea Ranch events, and especially the tours, are run largely by the docents. They are an integral part to the success of the McCrea Ranch and its mission to bring to the public an authentic look into the workings of a California ranch, and the legacy of Joel McCrea and Frances Dee.

All of us at the McCrea Ranch are thankful for them -- and for its amazing partnership with CRPD, who helps make everything possible. But truly, it is a labor of love for the docents, who show up, day in and day out, to make sure that the legacy continues.

Here is a photo of this year's cadre of docents, with fearless leader Wyatt, at the top!

Thank you, CRPD. Thank you, docents. The Ranch is truly a gift and treasure to the community.

McCrea Ranch December Open House with Santa a Success!

Young and old alike descended upon the McCrea Ranch on Saturday, December 6 for our Open House and visit with Santa. Many people who attended said that they hadn't been to the ranch before and were very glad that they came. Docents were on hand to give tours of the Milk House, the Bunk House, the Shop and the Visitor's Center. But the highlight of the day was Santa "Tom Hare" Claus who delighted children with his expert knowledge of their secret hopes and wishes for the holidays. The little folk -- and the older folk -- were delighted to have their photos taken with good old Saint Nick! Many families brought toys to support those families in need to have a Happy Christmas. All in all, it was a beautiful start to the holiday season. To those of you that visited the Open House or during the year's many events, we want to say thank you for your support of the McCrea Ranch. To those of you who still haven't come out, we look forward to welcoming you in 2026! Happy Holidays to all from the McCrea Ranch, the Docents, and CRPD.
