"Beneath the Angel of the Waters" is a painting I created a few months ago in my studio. It was recently awarded FAV15% in the competition and was accepted into the AIS National Exhibit in September.
I have painted this fountain plein air a few times while visiting NYC.
However, at the time, I was not aware of the amazing history of the fountain and the pool beneath it.
This is what I discovered....

Bethesda Fountain in Central Park is named after the biblical Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem, which was believed to have healing powers. The name was chosen because the fountain—topped by the Angel of the Waters statue—celebrates the opening of the Croton Aqueduct in 1842, which brought clean water to New York City and "healed" the city of devastating, water-borne disease outbreaks.

The Sculpture: Created by sculptor Emma Stebbins, it was the very first major public artwork commissioned to a woman in New York City. The angel is depicted blessing the water below her.
The Cherubs: Surrounding the central figure are four cherubs representing Purity, Peace, Temperance, and Happiness.

My first day in Paris has been wonderful!
Our apartment is perfectly located, just a short distance from Notre Dame and the Pantheon, and the day has been beautiful.
Tomorrow, my friend Patti will arrive, and we will enjoy each other's company and do some painting.
I am eager to have a relaxing and enjoyable week, and to improve my French skills, ha ha...
