Chile is one of the best places on our planet to look at the stars. To that end, this week, the European Southern Observatory announced the groundbreaking of a new gamma-ray observatory in the Atacama desert (eso.org/public/news/eso2521) and we brought back “Big Astronomy,” our in-house production about the telescopes and astronomy research in the South American country. Playing daily at 4:30pm.

As we mentioned in a previous post, our fearless leader Ryan Wyatt left the Academy earlier this fall. But he has yet to clean out his office as evidenced in this photo from today. Do you think he'll be able to pack it up in the 32 bankers boxes in the photo? Will he make his end of the year deadline? Stay tuned…

Do you have tickets for the last Dean Lecture of 2025? If not, grab them asap! Next Monday, Stanford’s Phil Marshall will tell us everything about the powerful Vera C. Rubin Observatory. The Chilean telescope is acquiring so much astronomical data that scientists have had to rethink the way its shared.

While you wait, here’s last December’s lecture, featuring Keith Hawkins taking us on an exploration of the Milky Way—our cosmic home.

Yesterday, we celebrated Morrison Planetarium and Visualization Studio Senior Director Ryan Wyatt’s tenure at the Academy. Ryan is moving on to the American Museum of Natural History in New York, where he’ll serve as Vice President of Science Visualization and Public Engagement.

We’ll miss his leadership, creativity, and more—and he’ll continue to serve as director of the upcoming planetarium show, opening in the spring.

With his departure—and Assistant Director Bing Quock’s departure last year—this page will sunset at the end of the year.

Not to worry, though! You can follow the Academy’s page and other social media channels for updates on MPVS.

Morrison Planetarium turned 73 over the weekend, so to celebrate we're remembering our history through this video that we put together for our 60th! Hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

A couple of weeks ago, we shared a “porpoise gone wrong” video where our artist fessed up to a mistake when trying to rig a harbor porpoise for our new show.
It looks like he learned from his mistakes. Progress!

Just in time for Halloween, a spooky bat has been spotted flying over the European Southern Observatory’s (ESO’s) Paranal site in Chile. The VLT Survey Telescope (VST) captured this large cloud of cosmic gas and dust, whose mesmerizing silhouette resembles a bat, thanks to its wide field of view. The RCW 94/95 nebulae are captured in this image, which combines both visible and infrared light.
