What makes Dansaekhwa one of Asia’s most influential 20th-century art movements? It reinvented traditional painting through hands-on, physical craft.

As Korea’s post-war monochrome movement, Dansaekhwa abandoned conventional image-making to focus entirely on raw materials and human gesture. Pioneer Ha Chong-Hyun pushed this idea to its limit by forcing thick oil paint through the back of coarse burlapβ€”a signature technique (bae-bae-seol, or back-pressure) that turns paint into a 3D, physical experience.
