October 17, 1968, The Jimi Hendrix Experience released the double LP “Electric Ladyland” on Reprise Records in the United States. Recorded over several months at Record Plant Studios in New York City, the record went on to become Hendrix’s only number 1 album on the Billboard Top LPs chart, holding the top position for two consecutive weeks.

This photograph was used for the right side of the double gatefold cover of Jimi Hendrix’s 1968 album, Electric Ladyland. It was shot in performance at Brian Epstein’s Saville Theatre the day Brian died – taken at the peak of Hendrix’s mastery of the electric guitar.

October 17, 1968, The Jimi Hendrix Experience released the double LP “Electric Ladyland” on Reprise Records in the United States. On October 4, 1970 Janis Joplin died of a he**in overdose in her room at the Landmark Hotel in Hollywood. She was 27 and finishing her second solo album, Pearl, which was released posthumously on January 11, 1971. Five of her singles reached the Billboard Hot 100, including her cover of “Me and Bobby McGee.” Her best-known recordings include “Piece of My Heart,” “Cry Baby,” “Down on Me,” “Ball and Chain,” “Summertime,” and “Mercedes Benz.”
