Lots of people ask Emily Beeny, chief curator of the Legion of Honor, if they’ve found a Manet, and this time, she was able to respond with an emphatic “yes!”

One of the coolest objects in "The Etruscans" exhibition is the "Liber linteus zagrabiensis" (linen book) 📜

This one was found in Alexandria, Egypt, where it had been cut into strips and used to wrap a mummy. It's the longest surviving Etruscan text we have!

Look closely and you'll spot letters from the Greek alphabet, passed from the Phoenicians to the Greeks, the Greeks to the Etruscans, and the Etruscans to the Romans... straight through to the alphabet we use today.

Meet Abby, one of our objects conservators, who’s been using 3D-scanning tech and handcrafting replacement rings to restore this bucchero vessel before it goes on view.

Bucchero was the Etruscans’ signature pottery style — that deep black color comes from firing the clay without oxygen, transforming its natural reddish-brown color into something entirely new.

We’re excited to announce “Azzedine Alaïa: Sculpting Fashion,” the first major US retrospective dedicated to the legendary couturier, opening November 21 at the Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco.

Alaïa was trained as a sculptor in Tunisia, and became famous for his ability to shape and mold fabric. He spent two decades as a Paris dressmaker before debuting his own collection in 1980. In 1987, he stepped outside the industry’s calendar entirely, showing only when he felt a collection was ready.
The exhibition brings together 80 garments from the Fondation Azzedine Alaïa in Paris, including designs worn by icons like Tina Turner, Naomi Campbell, Grace Jones, Stephanie Seymour, Veronica Webb, Linda Evangelista, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga.
