Behn Gallery is a non traditional art gallery that is redefining how people buy and experience art.

These two pieces were purchased some time ago, but they were waiting for the right home.

That home finally happened.

I installed them recently in the collectors’ new space, and seeing the work settled into the rooms after all that time felt like the final part of the process.

They were kind enough to leave a Google review afterward, and one line really stuck with me:

“Art with a story… pieces that you can look at and reflect on for hours and continue to come up with new thoughts.”

That is exactly what I hope for.

Not artwork that simply fills a wall, but work that keeps giving you something back over time.

They came to First Friday shortly after the installation and are already considering another piece for the new home.

That ongoing relationship between the collector, the artwork, and the space, is really what Behn is about.

These are the kinds of projects I love helping with: finding the right work, thinking through scale and placement, creating mockups, and making the process feel approachable from beginning to end.

If you have a space you’ve been trying to figure out, sometimes the best place to begin is simply with a conversation.

A few weeks ago, Number 12 was still an image I was pulling back out of the archive and spending some time with.

Now it’s on the wall.

That transition.

From noticing an image again, to printing it, finishing it, stretching it, arranging it, and finally seeing it live in a physical space is one of my favorite parts of making artwork.

Number 12 began with a weathered doorway in Honfleur, France.

But the longer I worked with it, the less it felt like it was simply about a door.

It became more about thresholds.

Time.

The marks people leave behind.

The ordinary places that quietly hold years of human experience.

I ultimately created a small grouping from the image rather than presenting it as a single photograph, and seeing the pieces together has changed the way I experience it again.

That’s part of the reason I keep coming back to the archive.

Sometimes an image isn’t finished when you make the photograph.

Sometimes you just haven’t caught up with it yet.

Number 12 is now hanging at Behn Gallery.

What a night.

A huge thank-you to everyone who joined us Friday at Behn Gallery — and to Akili Ni Mali and the incredible musicians who filled this little gallery with a whole lot of music.

Nights like this are one of the reasons Behn exists.

Artwork on the walls. Live music in the room. People meeting, talking, listening, looking, and sharing an experience together.

And an especially big thank-you to Friday’s sponsors — and really to all of the businesses and individuals who have sponsored evenings at Behn over the years.

Your support does more than help us put on an event.

Tonight at Behn Gallery.

The walls are reset, new work is up, the gallery is ready, and in just a few hours we’ll be welcoming Akili Ni Mali back for a really special First Friday evening.

Akili is coming down from Chicago with a jazz-influenced trio, and hearing an artist who has sold out venues like The Jazz Kitchen in a space this intimate is something I’m especially excited about.

There’s also quite a bit new to see in the gallery tonight — including Number 12, some newly presented work, and a few pieces that have found new relationships on the walls as I’ve been resetting the space this week.

Music begins at 7.

The gallery is in full reset mode this week.

Two pieces went out for installation last Friday, Number 12 is in the finishing stages now, and the walls are being reworked ahead of a private event Thursday, First Friday on Friday, and the Village Fall Festival this weekend.

This is one of the parts of having a working gallery that I really enjoy.

Pieces leave. New work comes in. Walls change. The room gets rethought. And somewhere in the middle of all of that, the gallery becomes something slightly different than it was a week before.

Right now, Number 12 is being lacquered and stretched and should be going up in the next couple of days.

By Thursday afternoon, the room will look very different.

That’s the fun of it.

This Friday, Akili Ni Mali is coming down from Chicago to play Behn Gallery — and this is a pretty special opportunity.

Akili has sold out The Jazz Kitchen multiple times and continues to perform in larger venues as her audience grows.

But on Friday night, she’ll be here with us in one of the most intimate settings you could experience her in.

Akili returns to Behn with a jazz-influenced trio for an evening of live music, artwork, drinks, conversation, and community.

There are days when it feels right to pause.

September 11th is one of them.

Most of us who are old enough to remember that morning remember where we were.

The confusion.

The disbelief.

The fear.

The silence after.

And then, slowly, the faces.

The names.

The families.

The first responders.

The strangers helping strangers.

The ordinary people suddenly carrying an unimaginable weight.

It is easy, especially now, to feel the ways we are divided.

But days like this remind me that underneath all of that, we are far more connected than we sometimes allow ourselves to remember.

We should not need tragedy to remind us of that.

But sometimes tragedy strips everything else away long enough for us to see it clearly.

People matter.

The ones we know.

The ones we pass on the street.

The ones doing their jobs.

The ones waiting at home.

The ones whose names we never learn.

The ones whose stories keep living in the people who loved them.

Today, I am thinking about memory.

About what changes.

About what remains.

About the responsibility we have to notice one another while we can.

And about the choice we still have, every day we are given, to be a little more human with each other.

Remembering September 11th.

And all who were lost, all who served, and all who still carry that day with them.

A piece is coming off the wall this week.

This one is from an Old Man of Storr hike in Scotland — a place full of story, weather, endurance, and memory.

I had been preparing to change some gallery walls, but before I packed this piece away, I reached out to someone who had expressed interest.

“Before I change this wall, is this still speaking to you?”

And it was.

That is often how buying art begins here: a piece catches your attention, you keep thinking about it, and we start a conversation about what it could mean in your space.

Grateful this one is heading somewhere it already belongs.
