You may have seen Laurie Alvear’s small paintings at CCA—but did you know she paints on leaves, too?

Every fall, Laurie gathers real leaves, dries and preserves them, then uses each one as a tiny canvas for her hand-painted scenes.

She’s been making them for years, and they’ve developed a bit of a following. Visitors have come into the gallery asking for “the artist who paints the leaves,” and some have even told Laurie they collect them.

Laurie is bringing a new group into CCA Gallery this week—just in time to start thinking about fall. 🍂

One Minute with an Artist: Cathy Brown

From Lake Michigan stones to tiny flowers formed in glass, nature seems to find its way into Cathy's work.

Cathy combines handmade glass beads and found stones with sterling silver to create truly one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces.

She hopes wearing her work makes the owner feel just as one-of-a-kind as the jewelry itself.

Meet Felix Melchor, August featured artist.

Felix began creating art in 2015, first working with ink, and then venturing into watercolor.

His work can be whimsical and playful, quiet and atmospheric, or somewhere in between. He hopes his work gives you room to bring something of your own to it. A story, a memory, or simply an appreciation for what catches your eye.

For more than 20 years, Deb Achgill has been creating colorful fused glass artwork that celebrates light, color, and joy.

This month at CCA Gallery you’ll find everything from vibrant floral pieces to her kaleidoscope-inspired glass plates, where layers of colorful glass create patterns reminiscent of looking through a kaleidoscope.

When asked what she hopes people notice about her work, Deb’s answer was simple: the color—and the smile it brings.

One Minute with an Artist: David O’Dell

David’s screen prints invite you to slow down and look a little closer. Hidden throughout many of his pieces are details you might miss at first glance—like windmills made entirely of musical instruments. It’s those thoughtful surprises that make his work so joyful and engaging.

One of my favorite parts of creating this series has been getting to know our artists. Every conversation reminds me there’s so much more to their stories than can fit into one minute.

We’re hoping to share extended interviews on a future CCA YouTube channel, so stay tuned for more opportunities to hear directly from the artists behind the work.
