FEATURE FRIDAY!

Meet the artist Heidi Mandich:

Heidi Mandich might be what you call a “giver.” She teaches her metalsmith jewelry techniques in the same room at the Indianapolis Art Center where she herself learned the basics. She is part of the non-profit “100 Voices of Hope,” supporting the Simon Cancer Research Center at Indiana University Hospital in Indianapolis. After working in Indiana’s tourism development office in college, she now continues to promote aspects of Indiana that make it special as an Indiana Artisan and some of those aspects, she works into the designs of her jewelry.

“I have always felt it important to give back,” Heidi said. “None of us got where we are today alone. There were teachers, mentors, family – people who shaped us into who and what we are.” And so today, she’s in the business of shaping.

“I took my first class in metalsmithing in 2006 and fell in love with the ability to manipulate, form and transform metal,” she said. “At the Indianapolis Art Center, I had been flame working, making lamp work glass beads. I wanted to find a way to showcase a unique glass bead, and I fell in love with metalsmithing.” The glass world’s loss was the jewelry world’s gain.

“I have come full circle and now teach beginners the love of using fire and hammers to manipulate metal in the same studio where I first learned,” she said; “and I continue to take classes to become better – at the Indianapolis Art Center; from Michael David Sturlin, of the of the Revere Academy; from Bruce Baker, the nationally renowned jeweler and presenter on a variety of topics related to successful art sales; and from Andrea Jackson at FC’drea Design, among others.”

Heidi enjoys the versatility and the challenge of metalsmithing – taking raw metal sheets of Argentium Sterling Silver and wire and creating something reflective of nature or architecture that, as so many artisan jewelers say, “becomes a favorite that customers love to wear.”

Part of the joy, she says, is the creation of something truly original. “It’s fun to create a design not seen anywhere else. I think that’s what people who seek out original handmade art are looking for – that piece that they won’t find ‘coming and going.’”

Heidi adds, “I find things here in Indiana that inspire me, and I try to recreate images that reflect them in my work – my mother’s peony garden, the swirls from a rock skipped on a still lake, the fall leaves in Brown County.

A native Hoosier, Heidi was honored to be included as an Indiana Artisan in 2014. “The support of the State in launching Indiana Artisan validates the work we do as individuals. Sometimes we are so close to what we do that we don’t realize the uniqueness of our work. It’s gratifying to be selected as one whose quality of work is good enough to represent our state, and it’s great that the State presents it as genuine talent. I wanted to become part of that story and again share things about this state that inspire me.”

FEATURE FRIDAY

Meet the artist Jessica Morrison:

Jessica is an artist who loves to explore the deep and difficult questions in life. Unpacking these often present emotions that can be difficult to communicate verbally, but can be felt and understood visually.

Her journey with Topical Steroid Withdrawal began in October of 2016, which is a debilitating and under-the-radar preventable health condition due to the over-prescribing of topical corticosteroids, typically used to treat eczema. This long journey in healing continues to teach her the importance of fixing our eyes only on Jesus as the source of our hope, joy, and salvation.

After years of being physically unable to make art, in 2022 she began a new series that has taken the form of abstract expressionism. It is dedicated to raising awareness for TSW and aiding ITSAN’s advocacy efforts. Her art unpacks different emotions felt throughout the process of healing, exploring the emotions of grief, and what it means to have joy in suffering.

She also enjoys illustrating and painting cultures, testimonies, horses, and landscapes. She works primarily with graphite pencil, traditional oil, acrylic, and watercolor paints. Her clientele locally, global heart for missions, and heart the persecuted Church continuously fuel the appreciation for diversity. The variety of these relationships, and numerous trips nationally and internationally to volunteer, inspire her with how we connect at the Cross, how we love Jesus, and therefore our neighbor.

When she is not making art, you can find her selling real estate, serving as a wife and mother, and involved at College Park Church.

Seasonal art is great, but so is ART in general.

Art doesn't have to match your home; you buy it because you connect with it, sometimes regardless of its subject matter, there's just something about it that speaks to you, like color.

This week we're rotating work, so if there's something in the gallery you've been eyeing, make sure you snag it before it's gone! Many of our artists have Fall & Winter themed paintings and decor, so if you're someone that decorates for the seasons, then this is directed to you! OR, if you're someone that buys art just because you love it, then these paintings by Kristin Whitney will make a wonderful year-round addition too!

FEATURE FRIDAY!

Meet the artist, Judy LaMere, potter.

Playing in the mud and developing my skills as a ceramist is a wonderful divergence from my 9-5, left-brain job.

In 2014 I took my first Beginning Pottery class at the Indianapolis Art Center. Since then, my interest has taken on a life of its own, and I now have a full working studio. The art of ceramics offers virtually limitless creative possibilities, and I am thankful to have been accepted as a member of CCA to have both an outlet for my creations, and to be a part of a truly enjoyable group of like-minded artisans.

FEATURE FRIDAY!

Meet the artist: Felix Melchor, watercolorist.

Originally from Hamler, a small town in NW Ohio, Felix resided in the Toledo, OH area for 35 years before moving to Carmel, IN in October 2019. Felix is a self-taught artist working primarily in watercolor paintings, pen & ink drawings or combined pen & ink and watercolor.

Felix started his art journey in 2015 and enjoys exploring different techniques and styles when creating his works. He finds that exploration allows him to create intuitively, share his vision and leave something behind. Felix also finds that creating art is a great form of escapism. He is most often inspired by nature, people, and cityscapes as subjects, but there is no limit nor boundaries in art, so on any given day…

Felix’s works have been displayed at a solo exhibition at American Frame Gallery in Maumee, OH; periodically at Fountain Square Brewery, Indianapolis; are currently displayed at CCA Gallery, Carmel, IN; are exclusively displayed at Brew House Coffee and Bake Shop, Maumee, OH; and his painting “Petrichor” was one of ten, selected from more than 1,500 entries, to be enlarged to storefront size and displayed at Indianapolis International Airport, Indianapolis as part of the SWISH event in March 2021. As of March 2022, the painting is still displayed at the airport.

FEATURE FRIDAY!

Meet Tish Reed, painter!

I see painting as a way for me to collaborate and listen in to the Creator Spirit. Through this collaboration I have learned to play, hold things loosely, be willing to let go and even turn the canvas upside down completely as I paint. I feel that this playfulness and joy shines through the work that we create together and trickles over into the way I live life onto the canvas, as well.

I love painting with acrylics because they are so forgiving and allow for this more intuitive style of painting and working in layers. I begin each painting with written prayer on the canvas and then start right in with no pre-conceived ideas of what may arrive. I consider each painting a special gift and I am a steward of helping it become what it wants to be.

FEATURE FRIDAY!

Meet Gail Wiener, photographer 📸

Gail Wiener has lived in 7 different states but has called Indianapolis her home for the past 35 years. She has always had a passion for interior design, decorating, reading, Bible study, traveling and photography. She was bitten by the photography bug while attending Slippery Rock State College.

She started taking her own “photo letters” in 2007 after seeing this new art form in a gift shop. She loved the concept but decided she could maybe find prettier letters. It proved to be a little more difficult than she thought but doing some extensive traveling that year (particularly to cities with old architecture) helped her to create a very interesting and beautiful alphabet. Her favorite photo letters come from St. Louis, Boston, San Francisco, Kansas City and right here in Indianapolis. While she originally printed her letters only in black & white, Gail now sells them mostly in color. She felt, “The B&W just didn’t do them justice!”
