Letter from the President!

Like so many of you, as 2020 draws to a close I am reflecting on how the world has changed this year. Beginning in March, we learned we needed to adjust our carefree ways to protect ourselves and others from the devastation of COVID-19. We learned how to stay at home, work from home, teach from home, wear masks, and stay away from loved ones. This was not an easy task. Many in our Portuguese Community have immediate families that consist of at least 30 people. We learned how to attend meetings, schedule visits, and communicate “virtually.” ZOOM and Microsoft Teams are common terms for us now. We used Facetime to chat with friends and loved ones. But, with all of these changes, I am encouraged by how quickly we have adapted to our new world.

As an organization, we also had to adapt and think outside-of-the-box. We needed to find solutions to pay for everyday PHC expenses. Our first change was to raise Membership prices. Although a small increase, we were concerned about our Members and how this would affect them. We were so grateful to all who supported us and understood why we needed to make this change. Although the Center building had to be closed because of COVID restrictions, we decided to sell our merchandise during the UPSES Drive-thru events. This was a great success! So far, the sales have paid for three month’s rent at least.

When we could open in early summer, we saw our community come together. We saw more foot traffic at the Center, people wanting to get out and learn about the Portuguese in San Diego, and donating to keep our doors open.

I want to acknowledge and thank my Board for all they have done this year. They have seen the chaos yet stood together as a united group. I am happy to lead this fine organization and feel so proud that we can continue to document our history for future generations …. and have fun doing it.

Despite the challenges of 2020, we have kept our spirits high. We are hoping for a better 2021. I pray for each one of you that the Lord protect you and your loved ones and keep you safe from this devastating disease. Also, to all who have lost a loved one this past year, the Portuguese Historical Center embraces you with comfort. To our members, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Healthy & Prosperous New Year.

Boas Festas e Feliz Ano Novo!

Abraços,

Therese Garces, PHC President

Come visit the center to see our Portuguese merchandise being sold for the holidays outdoors on Saturdays from Noon-3PM,

The photo below is from yesterday evening as a Navy Aircraft Carrier entered the port. Daniel Silva, member, and past President provided us with the beautiful evening shot as well. We ask you to fill the memorial with poinsettias to honor and remember our Fishermen who were lost at sea this Christmas Season. The plants will be watered 2 times a week to keep their beauty alive!

The PHC is looking for Board of Directors to join our vibrant organization! Please contact us if interested and pass the word along!

Other Books we offer:
The Varsity - Lee Brown, originally from Ocean Beach has discovered and written about an important and fascinating aspect of the Greatest Generation. Many veterans went to war by dropping out of school and enlisting underage. When they came home determined to resume their education, they were older and viewed by some educators as troublesome. As Lee shows us, these vets enriched their schools, communities (including our very our Point Loma and Ocean Beach Portuguese) and it’s time they get our appreciation."

Point Loma Portuguese R O S E V I L L E – Written by our very own Portuguese Point Loman, Jeanne Martin-Smith. A little bit of Portuguese History in the small community of Point Loma in San Diego, where so many Portuguese immigrants settled. Tuna fishing was a thriving industry the church was the heart of the community. Traditions were carried over from the old country and kept alive through storytelling and community events. Get to know this special little community reading along while enjoying the colorful photographs. A visual treat!

Bottom Fishing in the Western Pacific Purse Seiners. South Seas and the Proud Heritage in the background. Produced by Fred Rabello. Music by Allan Parsons
This upcoming June 2020 I am leading the study-abroad program “Culture and Contemporary Life in Portugal and the North of Spain.” In a collaboration with FLAD’s Study in Portugal Network, and our colleagues at the U. of Santiago de Compostela, we will be staying 27 days in Lisbon, Porto and Santiago de Compostela (including day trips to Sintra, Coimbra, Guimarães, the Douro Valley, Vigo, Lugo and Cape Finisterra). This course generates 6 units of SDSU credit and is open to non-SDSU students. Students can choose to enroll in Portuguese or Spanish courses and will conduct readings and complete assignments in the specific languages, accordingly. Students who do not speak Portuguese nor Spanish can also enroll in other SDSU General Education courses (Art and General Studies) and complete their readings and assignments in English. This promises to be a very enriching program, at a relative low cost: $5223 (includes lodging, all transportation in the countries, some meals, 3 to 4 star hotels in Lisbon and Porto, the individual rooms at the USC dorms, international insurance, all entrances to museums, etc., and even some meals). I have recorded a 30-minute video info-session, covering a slideshow on the contents of the program and instructions on how to enroll: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvLFmnoK0mE&feature=youtu.be Registration ends by March 15. Any questions: [email protected]
