“The tuna fishing industry had a profound influence on the Roseville community, also known as ‘Tunaville.’ Those who remember it have tales to tell.”
Local journalist, historian and president of the Ocean Beach Historical Society, Eric DuVall, wrote an incredible piece on the history of the Tunaman’s Memorial in the Pt. Loma OB Monthly.

Give it a read, share with your family and friends and then join us Sunday, March 17th as we celebrate the memorial at our annual Tunaman’s Memorial Service of Remembrance.

Have you applied for the Heritage Portugal Program yet?

Modeled after Birthright Israel, the Heritage Portugal Program invites Portuguese-Americans between the ages of 18-35, for an immersion program in Portugal. The immersion is in past, present and future elements: in Portuguese culture and roots, the present status of the country, and its future development and opportunities. The impact of this program is a new and reinforced spirit of belonging, relationships, and energy coming out of the sense of our common Heritage. Beyond this also will come new ideas, creativity, investment, connectivity, and opportunities for years and generations to come.

Help Wanted --- Wine Making in Pt Loma --- Help Wanted

Did you know that the Pt Loma Area has a long history in growing grapes and making wine?

It should not be a surprise considering the large Portuguese community that exists in the area.

One hundred years ago, along with establishing their livelihood in the fishing industry, the Portuguese people brought their local variety of grapes to the Pt Loma area. And guess what, it worked!

The grape variety, used to make Vinho Verde, turned out to be very suitable for the temperate Pt Loma climate.

A small group of wine makers are trying to keep this tradition going.

We have a small vineyard with about 160 vines.

We are seeking help to make this effort “grow”

Job Description - Pruning Grape Plants (bring your own pruning shears)

When: Saturday, January 13, 2024

Time: 8am to 12noon (approximate)

Where: 412 San Fernando St, San Diego 92106

Contact: [email protected]

619-223-7772

Followed by Spaghetti Lunch

NOTE: You will be given “cuttings” to take home to grow your own grapes. It is our understanding that this grape variety was smuggled from the Azores to San Diego about 100 years ago by local Pt Loma fisherman
