Today, community member Kenny Alameda will be giving a presentation at the Lisbon Maritime Museum during the IATTC Conference on the history of San Diego’s Portuguese tuna community.

We’re especially honored that the photographs featured in Kenny’s presentation were sourced from the Portuguese Historical Center archives, helping share and preserve the stories of our local Portuguese tuna pioneers with an international audience.

Kenny plans to livestream his presentation on his page at approximately 10:30 AM Pacific Time today, September 1st. Keep an eye out for the livestream link if you’d like to watch!

We wish Kenny a wonderful presentation and are grateful to see pieces of our community’s history being shared all the way across the Atlantic.

Come visit the Portuguese Historical Center at Festa da Lapa!

The PHC will have a pop-up tent at this year’s Festa da Lapa, so be sure to stop by and see us! We’ll have PHC merchandise available for purchase and would love to say hello while you enjoy an evening celebrating our Portuguese community.

Festa da Lapa will also feature music by 562 from Artesia, wine vendors, baked goods from Our Lady of Fatima, water slides, a mechanical bull ride, and more!

A Festa da Lapa Event

Bus departs from the UPSES Hall parking lot at 9:00 AM and returns approximately 4:00 PM.

Tickets are $25 per person. RSVP with payment via the Venmo QR code on the flyer.

As we previously shared, the handmade beanies created by our Coffee & Crocheting students were so warmly received by the chemotherapy patients who received them. We’ve since learned that even more patients would be grateful to receive a beanie, so we’d love to keep this meaningful project going and make as many more as we can!

Our next Coffee & Crocheting with Rosemarie & Marissa course begins August 23rd, and there is still space available in both our beginner and intermediate classes. Can’t make all four classes? If you can only attend one of the dates, you’re welcome to join us for $20 per class!

Upcoming Classes:
August 23rd & 30th
September 6th & 13th

Beginners: 10:00 AM–12:00 PM
Intermediate: 12:30 PM–2:30 PM

All four sessions are $60, including yarn and crochet hooks. The first class is mandatory for participants taking the full course.
