2nd Graders Sing to WWII Veterans at USS Midway Museum

A beautiful moment aboard Midway as a group of 2nd graders from Los Penasquitos ES sang to wheelchair bound WWII veterans who happened to be visiting the ship today.

Watch as the children perform their Christmas jingle to smiling WWII Veterans.

One veteran told the teacher he was crying because he was looking at all the children’s faces. He saw the diversity of the class and watching them sing together as “one” was the reason the veteran’s had gone off to war. ❣️

Read about why this year was a crucial year for Midway and for the entire world in the latest "Karl's korner" post by Midway's Ship Historian, Karl Zingheim.

In the coming months, Karl will continue to illustrate the hallmark moments and significant anniversaries that we are honoring this year as a result of the crucial year.#KarlsKorner

Hello, Midway Family! Welcome back to “Karl’s Korner”, a historical segment written by myself, Karl Zingheim – Ship Historian of the USS Midway Museum. As we fly in to 2020, I wanted my first post of the year to highlight the significance of 1945. This year was a crucial year for Midway and ...

3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Band

Stunning 🇺🇸

"Military traditions will always be a part of the Marine culture. Whether it is a customary greeting or saluting an officer, these traditions are a binding force for Marines around the world.

One of those traditions is the raising of the colors. All Marines will pause, stand at attention, and honor our nation's flag and all that it stands for.

Tomorrow morning at 0800, we will raise these colors. They will be raised in the same professional manner around the globe, and in every clime and place where Marines are stationed or forward deployed - because that is who we are and what we do.

Every day at 0800, the flag is raised on every base in every time zone. Every day at dusk, the flag is lowered.

To honor this long-standing tradition, the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Band's vocalist, Lance Corporal Megan Browning, aboard the USS Midway, recently recorded her rendition of our national anthem, The Star Spangled Banner, in honor of this solemn tradition.

Please enjoy our national anthem performed by Lance Corporal Browning."

Battleships & Aircraft Carriers

AIRCRAFT CARRIER MIDWAY (CV-41)

The USS Midway (CV-41) is a former US Navy aircraft carrier that served from 1945 to 1991. Today she sits at the San Diego waterfront as a museum (opened in 2004) in tribute to the US Navy servicemen and women who served on aircraft carriers either as sailors, pilots, air crew or marines.

The USS Midway is a massive ship and an impressive place to take a look around. She is 296 metres / 972 feet in length, with a beam of 41.5 metres / 136 feet and the flight deck width is 75.5 metres / 238 feet and powered by 12 boilers and four geared steam turbines with four shafts producing 212,000 shaft horsepower capable of a speed up to 33 knots. In her final operational years Midway would typically carry 68 aircraft (36 F/A-18 Hornets, 18 A-6 Intruders, 4 EA-6 Prowlers, 4 E-2 Hawkeyes and 6 Sh-3 Sea King helicopters), a complement of over 4,700 personnel (2,828 crew, 1,860 air wing and 72 marines) and total displacement weight was 67,000 tonnes fully loaded. Modern day nuclear carriers are even bigger. The Nimitz class nuclear carriers for example are 333 metres / 1,092 feet in length, weigh 88,000 tonnes, carry around 80 aircraft and have a ships complement of over 5,000 personnel (crew of 3,000-3,200, air wing of 1,500 and 500 others such as Marines etc.).

The Midway served with distinction on a number of tours during the Vietnam War (April to November 1965, May to October 1971, April 1972 to February 1973 – apart from combat missions, 48 rescue missions of downed pilots were also conducted by helicopters from Midway during this last tour). The Midway and Carrier Wing CVW-5 received the Presidential Unit Citation (Navy) from Richard Nixon for extraordinary heroism displayed during the period of 1972 to 1973 on the carriers last combat tour of Vietnam.

Take a look inside our F-14 Tomcat cockpit! This iconic jet used its ‘swing wing’ design for high speed dogfighting with the wings swept back and for landing aboard carriers when extended. The F-14, made famous in the movie “Top Gun” served as the Navy’s premier fighter from the 1970s to 2006.

Help us to congratulate our first Volunteer of the Month for 2020, Paul “Chappie” Ward!

In his short time with the Midway, Paul has brought a very positive energy to the Midway Family as a member of the “yellow hat” docents, Outreach team, and the Exhibits crew.

Before Midway, Paul served as a Chaplain with the Civil Air Patrol - USAF Auxiliary (civilian volunteer) from October 1996 to December 2018 – serving an extensive list of assignments - hence his nickname! He has received several awards with Civil Air Patrol USAF Auxiliary. Also during that time, Paul, retired from the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office (2003-2017) and was involved in Pastoral Ministry (1973-2003).

Today as a volunteer, Paul brings his creativity, dedication, and excitement to the ship daily. He has been a wonderful member of the Outreach team, spearheading the design and name of the Outreach team newsletter and offering to assist in any other capacity to support bringing the Midway Magic off the ship and to communities all across San Diego. In addition, Paul is a dedicated supporter in exhibits, taking on routine, some might say mundane, tasks to assure Midway is always looking ship-shape. If that isn’t enough, he is a loyal docent, serving on regular watches, evening events, and as an evening Docent on Watch (DOW). He is known around here as “HAPPY CHAPPIE”.

Thank you Chappie for contributing to the Midway Magic, we appreciate you!

Today marks a very special anniversary for the USS Midway Museum!

15 years ago on January 10, 2004, the USS Midway departed on her final mission as she moved via tug boat across the San Diego Bay to take up permanent residence moored alongside downtown San Diego's historic Navy Pier.

Since that day, the USS Midway Museum has become a permanent tribute, memorial, and education center of naval aviation and service to country for San Diegans and visitors alike.

Take a look at these photos, celebrate with us, and share your Midway memories with us below! Stay tuned for more milestones as we share with you 15 years of Midway!

Our Story

Midway Family!

Thank you for helping us preserve the historic USS Midway and the legacy of those who serve, inspire and educate future generations, and entertain our museum guests!

The USS Midway was commissioned as the largest warship in the world in 1945. Following, Midway’s adventures took her and her crew through historic moments such as Operation Frostbite (1946), Operation Sandy (1947), the Vietnam War, Operation Frequent Wind and the Evacuation of Saigon (1975), Operation Desert Storm (1991), and the rescue after the Mt. Pinatubo eruption. The USS Midway was decommissioned in 1992, and 12 years later in 2004 - was opened as the USS Midway Museum in San Diego, CA.

Years and millions of visitors later, we are so honored to preserve the legacy of the USS Midway and her crew.

Testimony of Pilot: Pilgrimage of Honor On the evening of 10 January 1973 , VA-115 “Arabs” aircrew Lt. Mike “Mondo” McCormick and Ltjg. Alan “Arlo” Clark, were catapulted from the USS Midway,on a single plane low level SAM and Radar Suppression mission in support of B-52’s on a bombing operation over North Vietnam. That night Mondo and Arlo would become the last Intruder Crew to make the ultimate sacrifice in that long war. This January 10th on the anniversary of the shoot down of his father, Col Tad Clark (USAF) returned to the crash site to honor his Dad and Mondo.
Visited the USS Midway today and was very pleased with our visit. We managed to explore most of the ship and absolutely loved it. Having visited the sister ship, Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in NYC the Midway was our second ship but we'll continue to visit more. Many thanks for the work you all do to keep the memories of the Midway alive :) Best wishes and prayers go to all who served on her over the years too.
Looking for the complete version from the "Midway Magic" ship's paper 1978 or 1979: "T'was the Night Before Christmas" This was a purely Midway rendition of the classic poem! If anybody has a copy, please post or message me a copy to me! Thanks, Shipmates! PO2 Sellers
Produced by myself and shipmate Orion Gallagher in 1981. This was used as a pilot recruiting video. Wish I had a better copy! I'm glad someone posted it to YouTube.
