Today, it was officially announced that Freedom Park at Navy Pier will now be named in honor of the legendary businessman, philanthropist, sailing champion, and driving force behind bringing the USS Midway Museum to San Diego, Mr. Malin Burnham.

Midway is also pleased to announce our newest campaign, “Matching for Malin.” We will match donations made to Freedom Park, dollar for dollar, up to $5 million, in honor of Malin Burnham.

Malin’s visionary leadership helped bring the USS Midway to San Diego, forever changing how we honor veterans in our city. Now with Freedom Park at Burnham Navy Pier, we have the chance to create the West Coast’s largest tribute to those who served—all while celebrating Malin’s lifelong commitment to community and philanthropy. Ray Snyder, one of a select few WWII veterans who volunteers at the USS Midway Museum, has celebrated his 100th birthday.

In 1945, Ray served aboard the USS Shangri La CV38 as an Ensign Communications Watch Officer and was in the North Pacific during Operation Crossroads in June 1946. After completing his first chapter in the Navy, Ray taught Engineering Physics but was eventually recalled to active duty at the start of the Korean War to serve aboard the escort destroyer USS Edward H. Allen DE-31 as a lieutenant working in communications and anti-submarine warfare.

Today, as a USS Midway Museum volunteer, Ray has been keeping a journal of his guest interactions, specifically documenting tales of those who were adolescents during the WWII era. Ray also started collecting coins from visitors, trading with those who are interested.

When asked why he boards the USS Midway Museum every week, Ray says he intends to ‘pay it forward’ because the Navy gave him many opportunities he might otherwise never have had.

Happy birthday Ray! Thank you for your service and dedicated work aboard Midway.⚓️🇺🇸

Among all departments, the Information Technology (IT) Department is a key reason for the ongoing success of the museum. Heading into our third decade as a top tourist attraction, Midway will face new challenges relating to information technology, but these are opportunities for growth in ways that could never have been imagined on opening day 20 years ago.

Our Story

Midway Family!

Thank you for helping us preserve the historic USS Midway and the legacy of those who serve, inspire and educate future generations, and entertain our museum guests!

The USS Midway was commissioned as the largest warship in the world in 1945. Following, Midway’s adventures took her and her crew through historic moments such as Operation Frostbite (1946), Operation Sandy (1947), the Vietnam War, Operation Frequent Wind and the Evacuation of Saigon (1975), Operation Desert Storm (1991), and the rescue after the Mt. Pinatubo eruption. The USS Midway was decommissioned in 1992, and 12 years later in 2004 - was opened as the USS Midway Museum in San Diego, CA.

Years and millions of visitors later, we are so honored to preserve the legacy of the USS Midway and her crew.
