Get ready – Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends return to the museum on August 14 for Thomas Family Day! From 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., enjoy live music & movement from Songbirds Music, express your creativity with arts & crafts, and watch Thomas trains make their way around our model railroad exhibits.

This #TrainFactTuesday, learn how a mischievous train prank helped a football team capture the victory 🏈 In the early morning hours of November 7, 1896, Auburn University ROTC cadets greased 400 yards of rails to prank the Georgia Tech football team, which was arriving via train for the day's game. The train slid 5 miles past the train station, and the Georgia Tech team had to walk back to Auburn. Unsurprisingly, the well-rested Auburn football team won the game.

Did you know we have a replica of an early 1900s trolley? 🚎 Trolleys like these transported people around San Diego, including to the 1915 Panama California Exposition in Balboa Park. The mural behind it is the train depot in downtown San Diego as it appeared in the 1930’s. Next time you visit, come take a seat!

Navigating tricky mountains is a challenge on all California railroads, whether they’re fantastical or historical! The Goat Canyon Trestle, which you can see in the San Diego & Arizona Eastern exhibit, was created as an alternate route after a mountain tunnel collapsed, and still stands today in real life.

One model railroad club, two stunning exhibits! 🚉🚂 This Spotlight Week, our social media will focus on the San Diego & Arizona Eastern and the Cabrillo Southwestern, and the San Diego Model Railroad Association, the club that created them.
Four independent model railroad clubs maintain & operate the exhibits you know and love at the museum, and this week, the museum is asking you to help reach its $40,000 goal! 50% of the donations made to the museum this week will support the San Diego Model Railroad Association. The San Diego & Arizona Eastern is in HO Scale, so 1 inch of the model represents 87 inches in real life. It depicts a real railroad, from downtown San Diego to El Centro, as it existed in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The Cabrillo Southwestern is in O Scale, so 1 inch of the model represents 48 inches in real life. It is a freelance model railroad, meaning the design was entirely created from the modelers’ imagination.

Today is Juneteenth, honoring the day the last enslaved people in the nation learned of their freedom. Many of the most important figures in the early story of the American railroad were former slaves or children of former slaves, and the events of Juneteenth set in motion a shift in the railroad industry and the whole country towards a more equitable nation.
We celebrate inventors like Andrew J. Beard, trailblazers like Edwina Justus, and the black railroad workers of yesterday and today. The work towards a more equitable nation, that began on June 19, 1865, is far from done.
