On August 6, 2011, a U.S. Army CH-47 Chinook carrying a Quick Reaction Force was shot down while responding to reinforce Army Rangers engaged in combat in Afghanistan's Wardak Province. The crash claimed the lives of 38 personnel and one military working dog, including 17 U.S. Navy SEALs, five Naval Special Warfare support personnel, three Air Force Special Tactics operators, five Army National Guard and Army Reserve aircrew, seven Afghan commandos, and one Afghan interpreter.

The loss of Extortion 17 remains the deadliest single incident involving U.S. forces during the war in Afghanistan and the greatest single loss of life in the history of the U.S. Special Operations Command. Today, we remember the courage, service, and sacrifice of those who gave their lives and honor the legacy they left behind.

On August 2, 1990, Iraqi forces invaded Kuwait, prompting an international response that marked the beginning of the Gulf War. The United States immediately launched Operation Desert Shield, which lasted from August 2, 1990 to January 17, 1991, to defend Saudi Arabia and prepare for the liberation of Kuwait. It was the first large-scale combat deployment of Navy SEALs since the Vietnam War.

In the opening weeks of the campaign, SEALs conducted a maritime deception operation that convinced Iraqi forces a coalition amphibious assault was imminent. The successful feint drew enemy troops to the coast, helping create favorable conditions for the coalition's ground offensive.

The conflict then transitioned to Operation Desert Storm, which ran from January 17, 1991 to February 28, 1991. During the campaign, SEALs carried out special reconnaissance, maritime interception operations, combat search and rescue, mine countermeasures, and beach reconnaissance. They also liberated the first Kuwaiti territory, captured the first Iraqi prisoners of war, and were among the first U.S. forces to enter Kuwait City.

Today, we commemorate the beginning of Operation Desert Shield and honor the Navy SEALs whose courage, skill, and service helped pave the way for the coalition's success.

A SEAL Delivery Vehicle (SDV) is a small, underwater submersible designed to transport U.S. Navy SEALs covertly through the ocean to their mission. Unlike a submarine, an SDV is free-flooding, meaning the operators remain submerged in seawater throughout the journey while breathing from specialized life-support equipment.

The concept dates back to the early 1950s, when military planners recognized that submarines couldn't safely reach shallow coastlines. A smaller underwater vehicle would allow special operators to travel long distances beneath the surface, arriving at their objective undetected and ready to execute the mission.

Today's SDVs are equipped with advanced navigation, communication, and life-support systems, allowing SEALs to conduct missions including:
⚓ Mine reconnaissance and hydrographic surveys
⚓ Covert insertion and extraction
⚓ Maritime operations
⚓ Mine and hydrographic surveys
