Monique van Genderen is a featured artist in our current exhibition "Edgeless: In the Expanded Field of Painting" in the University Art Gallery from Sept. 24 - Dec. 3.
Monique van Genderen (Canadian, born 1965) lives and works between Los Angeles and San Diego. She received her B.F.A. from the University of California, San Diego, in 1987 and her M.F.A. from California Institute of the Arts in Valencia in 1991. Van Genderen’s work has been widely exhibited, including at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the Albertina Museum in Vienna, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, Kunstmuseum St. Gallen in Switzerland, the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles and the New Museum in New York. Her work is held in collections including the Albertina Museum, the Institut Valencià d’Art Modern in Spain, the Eileen Harris and Peter Norton Family Foundation, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Minnesota Museum of American Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. Her honors and commissions include a project for Murals of La Jolla, the Chiaro Award from Headlands Center for the Arts, and a federal courthouse building art commission through the U.S. General Services Administration’s Art in Architecture program. In 2006, she was shortlisted for the Castellón County Council III International Painting Prize in Spain, and in 2004 she was an artist in residence at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas.
