Visit Us: TheStudioDoor.com As an S-Corporation, The Studio Door leads by example as a for-profit business while encouraging economic development. Over 2,000 artists have exhibited and participate in ex

hibits and creative programming lead by the business. After several initial North Park locations, The Studio Door settled in the heart of the Hillcrest neighborhood. The 4,300 sq foot storefront contains a sprawling art gallery surrounded by 16 artist studios and a small “museum store.” Half of the gallery space converts into a public space, which has held live local Jazz concerts, Drag Queen performances, art workshops and public gatherings. The gallery is nationally known for its annual exhibitions, The Crow Show and PROUD+, as well as the regional biennial 50 To Watch. As a strong community partner, The Studio Door collaborates with Mission Federal ArtWalk’s Business of Art Scholarship. Behind The Studio Door is “Mural Alley.” In 2010, the alley boasted an incredible mural by renown artist Shepard Fairey (now obscured by new development). Almost a decade later, local muralists have taken up the call to enrich the neighborhood. Hillcrest Business Association has secured the funding to hand rope lights across the alley and future events are being planned. In 2019, The Studio Door was awarded a Nicky Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Arts by the LGBTQ community. Additionally, recognition came from California’s Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins, Assemblymember Todd Gloria and Councilmember Chris Ward for community service in the arts. Selected for the 2024 San Diego Tourism Authority Accelerator Program.

held a wonderful evening for the neighborhood Artists who worked on the utility boxes in Hillcrest. Fantastic gathering of local creatives. Great to see so many familiar faces from the community who came out to support them as well.

Artist Christine Diveley •

Trained in interior design and psychology, my approach to painting is both instinctive and reflective, guided by the emotional responses elicited by each piece.
Although I have always been passionate about art, it wasn’t until 2019 that I began to engage with painting more seriously, seeking formal training to refine my craft. Since then, I have explored watercolors, mix media and acrylics to create a diverse range of works, including abstract compositions and landscapes, collages, often inspired by the light and colors of the Mediterranean —a tribute to my Algerian
heritage and Parisian upbringing.

My art is a journey through the interplay of color and form, seeking to evoke a sense of place and feeling beyond the literal, inviting viewers
to experience the world through my eyes.

Time and again I return to painting the figure because it offers endless creative options. My approach is intuitive, expressive. I use edgy compositions to support my story and after placing the figure I begin the journey toward completion, using acrylics, mark-making and occasionally collage. Art is best when it is emotional and challenges the viewer to complete the story. Sometimes the story is simply to entice the viewer to say “Wow”.

I am a Signature member of the National Watercolor Society, the San Diego Watercolor Society, the International Society of Experimental Artists and the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies.

The small moments are all around us. Those few minutes when the sunset speaks to your soul, theebb and flow of the ocean that pulls you into its lullaby, the flare of light shimmering off a pane of glass. I slowly build layers of paint to let that moment, that emotion, emerge from the canvas and come to rest before us.

Each piece explores the theme of ethereality through a monochromatic lens. Using a black-and-white palette with a metallic accent, I delve into contrasts of light and shadow, allowing texture and form to emerge in vivid clarity. This choice not only highlights the intricacies of my subjects’ features—defined eyes, serene expressions, and elegant adornments—but also invites viewers to engage with the emotional narratives woven into each piece. Each portrait is a journey into the depths of character, reflecting symbolic connections of celestial deities.

I am interested in the representational and the non-representable visual language that plays between the order and the chaos of the viewer. While I enjoy the solid ground of skill pushing and referencing objects in reality, I found it fundamentally trace back to conditions that are universal and perfect by themselves, with no compromise. The space between objective reality and the space that cannot be expressed by language or through things provide risk and excitement for me to play with the gaze of
the audience.

My art explores the vibrancy of Indian culture, inspired by its rich textiles, saturated colors, and metallic accents that evoke elegance and grandeur. Using various techniques, I create abstract pieces that highlight both visual and tactile experiences. Metallics, in particular, add a dynamic quality, shifting in hue with light and evoking a festive spirit of Indian celebrations. The interplay of shimmering surfaces and bold contrasts transforms my art into a celebration of beauty and festivity, inviting viewers to immerse
themselves in its cultural richness.

Artist Michele Joyce •

My artistic journey is an exploration of finding the extraordinary within the ordinary. Unlike art that seeks to convey a specific social statement, my creations are a whimsical invitation to perceive the world differently, to elevate one's emotional state through a unique lens. Simply put, I want my art to make people smile—to be playful, rebellious, and sometimes a bit irreverent. Abstracts and abstracted figures are my chosen realms of creative expression. The allure of the process and the unparalleled freedom it
offers allow me to delve into a world where lines and marks take center stage. My pieces are a dance of lines breaking free from established structures, expressing an inner looseness of spirit and a yearning for escape and exploration.
