Starkweather Art Center is a non-profit art center located on Main Street in the Village of Romeo, located north of Detroit Michigan. Starkweather owes its existence to a trust created by Helen Starkweather, a lifelong resident of Romeo. Ms. Starkweather taught art and drafting in the Romeo school system for more than forty years. When she died in 1987 at the age of eighty-four, she left her estat

e to the Romeo Historical Society and the Village of Romeo. Her will stipulated that her home and studio at 219 North Main Street be used as an art and cultural center “…dedicated to promoting and fostering the appreciation of art and artisans and to support the preservation of the character and quality of the Village”. In 1989, the Board of Trustees incorporated the Starkweather Society, a not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to fulfilling the wishes expressed in Ms. Starkweather’s will. On November 13, 1999, Ms. Starkweather’s former home and studio was officially opened to the public as the Starkweather Arts Center. The Center includes two beautiful exhibit galleries and a sales gallery. Our 2nd floor gallery restoration project was completed in 2009 and has allowed us to launch an Art Education program

In the 20+ years since the incorporation, many volunteers and corporations have contributed to Starkweather’s success. The SAC is dependent in large part on the generosity of its membership dues and volunteer efforts. We are also dependent on, and have been fortunate to receive, major support from taxpayer grants, corporate sponsorships, donations and special event fundraising. The Village of Romeo, Bruce Township, Ford Motor Company, and L&L Products of Romeo–just to name a few–have been especially generous with their financial help. Helen Starkweather understood the value of art in society. It is the goal of the SAC to foster and promote artistic excellence in the Village of Romeo and surrounding communities. By providing quality art experiences through art education, exhibits and events, Starkweather aims to enhance the quality of life in Northern Macomb County.

We truly enjoyed hosting Advancing Macomb for their evening event. We got to spend time with our mentors and meet some talented non profit leaders, in addition to introducing them to Starkweather and our current show "Hats Off!".

On June 4, we had the honor of hosting our Spring 2026 Nonprofit Accelerator cohort members to enjoy a closing toast complete with good food, great company, and a presentation of certificates for all their hard work over the past few months.

During this session of the Accelerator, cohort participants and our partners covered a variety of topics from leadership and governance, to fundraising and grant writing, to decision-making led by data.

We'd like to say a special thank you to Accelerator alumni Starkweather Arts Center for hosting the toast at their beautiful, historic building in downtown Romeo.

We are so proud of this cohort and look forward to all the wonderful things they will accomplish in the future!

Helen Starkweather passed in 1987, leaving the bulk of her estate to become an arts center. Among the items left was a large collection of vintage hats. Helen's mother, Emilia, ran Starkweather Millinery out of our 1865 building at 219 N Main. These beautiful hats are currently on display through July 25. Don't miss the chance to see them! The last exhibit was 20 years ago! Thanks Joan and Shirley for visiting!

Update: This is Archie. He is well cared for and lives on N Rawles. But he's a bit of a stinker and likes to sneak out of his adopted mom's house. His first mom sadly passed. Now that we've more formally met, we welcome him to hang out with us.

This orange visitor is here for 2nd time. Very friendly and doesn't seem hungry. Anyone know who he belongs to? We're just hanging on the back porch during the rain.
