We have added another interview from our digital Romeo Peach Festival Oral History Collection to our online catalog!

Last year, we spoke to the 2018 Michigan Peach Queen of Romeo Runner-Up Michelle Klein (nee Pantalena). She reminisced on her memories of the Romeo Peach Festival "Hometown" Parade, her participation in the Peach Queen pageant, and being runner-up. Michelle also discussed the Peach Queen sisterhood and what she has done since.

Today, our Photo of the Week post is dedicated to Edward Battani. He was a teacher at Romeo High School from 1953 to 1986. Ed taught history, gym, and driver's education as well as coached football and basketball.

Celebrating America's 250th Birthday means uncovering our history for all to see. On July 4, 1876, the First Congregational Church installed a cornerstone with a copper box containing items that told its history while the church was being constructed.

One hundred years later, in 1976, the church removed the cornerstone, so the contents could be displayed in the church. O.B. Gould made a new copper box, so it could go into the cornerstone along with "current items." It was not meant to be opened until July 4, 2076.

However, when the church closed its doors in 2021, the box resurfaced. Both boxes and their items were donated to the Romeo Community Archives as part of the First Congregational Church Collection. Some of these can be seen in the display we currently have at the Romeo District Library - Kezar Branch. Check it out!

Put on your favorite hat because on Friday, June 5th, the Starkweather Arts Center and the Starkweather Society will host an opening reception for the "Hats Off!" exhibition.

Do you remember the Whistle Stop railroad museum? Have you ever wondered about how it came to be? It all started when Bob Owen - a streetcar and railroad buff - purchased an old railroad station and moved it to the corner of 29 Mile and Van D**e Roads in 1966.
