Welcome to Time Capsule Tuesdays !

We will shine a spotlight on items from the time capsule and/or update the preservation process on the items from the 1976 Homecoming Time Capsule on Tuesdays. 😊

Unfortunately, once the concrete crypt was opened, it was discovered the items were kept in a wooden box and plastic bags and the crypt was flooded with water. This caused significant deterioration to many of the items.

The Historical Society fortunately has connections with Almont Native Anne Sexton, who is a professional archivist and who was in town for Homecoming!

Volunteers from the Historical Society are working closely with Anne to preserve and stabilize the items so they may eventually be displayed at the Museum .
While some paper documents are completely gone , Anne is confident that many of the items can be saved.

So right now our priority is to stabilize and preserve these items . It is imperative we go slowly and safely with the progress. More information on the progress itself in future posts.

The original Time Capsule committee stipulated that the items could be returned to the families that contributed them if they wanted them. The rest would be entrusted to the Almont Historical Society .

Our first item we would like to showcase is this adorable Bicentennial doll.

Mildred and Jim Simpkins had it put into the time capsule. Their daughter Deb Davis and grandson Nick Davis were present at the opening on August 15th and were delighted to see the Betsy Ross doll. Deb was 8 years old at the time it was put into the time capsule.

Luckily , the glass mason jars Mildred selected to filled with patriotic and family items, helped keep the items fairly well preserved.

Mildred was the 1976 Homecoming Committee’s secretary. Her daughter, Deb Davis , a 1986 Almont Grad, stated : “I wish she could have been here to see this because she was so involved with the park and the community. My Mom put a lot of thought into what she wanted to include in the time capsule.”

We were able to record a small section of Dan’s program. Unfortunately, we do not have professional grade equipment, and someone phone went off during the recording of other sections. Outside travel noise also was a challenge but we will look into ways to improve the video capture in the future. If anyone wants to donate a lapel microphone system we would love it. It will help our speakers and audience. In meantime, we will continue to work on ways to share our programs. Hope you can enjoy what we were able to salvage . Video is cropped as best as we could so not to show audience. It was a full house. The whole program was fantastic and the informal chat that followed was wonderfully informative and personal.

Thank you for everyone who came to our Native American History Presentation by Dan Kurkowski.

We were at full capacity, even spilling over into our little office area in the back. Your support was amazing and humbling. The proceeds raised today will go right back into the museum coffers for future events. We are already discussing another presentation on a different historic topic. May have to move to a larger venue. Like they say: stay tuned!

A big thanks to Mr Kurkowski for donating his time to do this program , to historical society member Mike Meronek for suggesting and contacting Dan. To Katie Redner for donating the refreshments. To Stacy Kmetz, Carolyn Rayl, Pat Spencer and Lynn Nolin for setting up the table, seating and playing host.

August 15, 1914 Newspaper article. Lots of activity and the second Community Homecoming just wrapped up. New Water Well, Electric Streetcars, oh my!
