Operated by The Texas Historical Commission, Fulton Mansion State Historic Site represents the Victorian home built by George and Harriet Fulton in 1877, complete with progressive and luxurious elements for this part of Texas history. Hours: Tuesday-Saturday 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM, Sunday 1:00 - 4:00 PM
Note: Last tickets sold at 3:15 PM
Closed: Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Yea

From the early semi-feral herds to the post-Civil War cattle trails, longhorns have long been an integral part of Texas History. The distinctive breed (you can guess how they got their name) are descended from cattle brought over the Atlantic by Spanish colonizers. Our resident longhorn, Showdown, didn’t come from the large herd managed by George Fulton’s cattle company, but he would’ve fit right in!

While other cattle breeds have replaced longhorns as the main source of beef in the United States, they’ve become a symbol for Texas itself. Showdown comes from The State of Texas Longhorn Herd. You can visit them at Fort Griffin State Historic Site in Albany, Texas.

Deep within the Fulton Mansion lies a unique solution to a big problem. Crushed oyster shells fill the walls and floor, acting as insulation. What might otherwise be another big, drafty house is a well-sealed structure that, over nearly 150 years, has withstood all the weather the Gulf Coast has thrown at it. Visit our exhibit room on the second floor to see for yourself!

Our new exhibit is live! These commemorative souvenirs from the 1876 Centennial Exposition are now on display in our visitor center. As we celebrate the 250th anniversary, flash back to the 100th at the World's Fair in Philadelphia. Many of the innovations brought to the expo made their way into the design and decor of the Fulton Mansion. Stop by and see for yourself!

Mansion object is before time's up? No cheating!

With hundreds of artifacts on display, you'd be hard
pressed to find them all in one visit, but this one can be
found in the Parlor on the first floor. It's a mechanical penny bank. Popular for decades after the first patent in 1869 by James Serrill, they're more magical than practical. Penny banks come in all shapes and sizes, each with its own unique trick. This whimsical toy can make a small coin disappear under the magician's hat. Now you see it, now you don't!

Exhibit News! We have new objects on display in the Education Center for a limited time. In the spirit of America's 250th anniversary, this exhibit takes you back to the Centennial Exposition at the 1876 World's Fair in Philadelphia, PA.

Many designs found in the Fulton mansion can be traced back to the cutting-edge exhibitions presented at the Expo by manufacturers from all over the country and all over the world. Come on down and see us to learn more!

With hundreds of artifacts on display, you'd be hard pressed to find them all in one visit, but this one can be found in the Dining Room on the first floor. It's an ink well! Before fountain pens and ballpoints, pens had to be dipped in ink first before writing. The containers that held the ink, called ink wells, could be simple and practical or highly decorative.
