The History Center for Aransas County showcases local heritage. Outdoor and indoor exhibits tell the stories of the real people of Aransas County. The Center provides a space for displays, workshops, meetings, and gatherings. Sat. & Sun. 1-4 pm; Based on Volunteer fulfillment.

As we prepare for our next exhibit commemorating the 250th Anniversary of the United States, the History Center is seeking artifacts and memorabilia that honor the men and women who have served our nation.

From the American Revolution to today's armed forces, we are looking for items representing all branches of military service and all eras of American history.

We're interested in loaned artifacts such as:
• Uniforms
• Medals and ribbons
• Photographs
• Letters and diaries
• Military equipment and gear
• Flags
• Service memorabilia
• Homefront items
• Personal stories and keepsakes

Every artifact has a story, and together they help preserve the sacrifices, courage, and service of generations of Americans.

If you have an item you would be willing to loan for this special exhibit—or know someone who does—we would love to hear from you.

1776: A Different Perspective

While America Declared Independence... Texas Was Still Spanish.

When most people picture 1776, they imagine Philadelphia, the Declaration of Independence, and the birth of the United States.

But more than 1,500 miles away, Texas was part of the Spanish Empire.

Missions, presidios, ranches, and Native communities were already part of everyday life here. The people living in Spanish Texas were not part of the thirteen colonies, and most likely had no idea the Continental Congress had just approved the Declaration of Independence.

Yet the story of Texas and the American Revolution is deeply connected. In the years that followed, Spain became an important ally in the fight against Britain, and Texas played a role in supporting Spain's efforts along the Gulf Coast.

Our exhibit, 1776: Texas at the Dawn of the American Revolution, explores this often-overlooked chapter of history and reveals how Texas fit into a much bigger story.

It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Ram Chavez.

Ram was the longtime director of the Veterans Band in Corpus Christi and generously shared his talents with the History Center for Aransas County during our Vietnam exhibit. His willingness to help us honor the service and sacrifice of our nation’s veterans made a lasting impact on our visitors and our community.

We are grateful for his support, his dedication to preserving the stories of those who served, and the kindness he extended to our organization.

On behalf of the History Center for Aransas County, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Ram’s family, friends, the Veterans Band, and all whose lives he touched. His legacy will live on through the music, service, and memories he leaves behind.

⏱️ **60 Seconds of History**

What is Shellcrete?

If you've ever admired one of Rockport's older buildings, you may have noticed something unusual about its walls. Look closely—you might be seeing shellcrete!

Made by mixing crushed oyster shells with cement (or lime), sand, and water, shellcrete became a popular building material along the Texas coast because it was strong, durable, and made from materials found right here in our bays.

From homes and churches to businesses and public buildings, shellcrete helped shape the unique character of our coastal communities. Many of these beautiful structures are still standing today, reminding us of the ingenuity and resourcefulness of those who built them.

The next time you're walking around Rockport, take a closer look—you might spot shellcrete hiding in plain sight!

We are saddened to remember one of our original board members, Sandra "Sandy" Garrison, who recently passed away.

Sandy was instrumental in helping relocate the History Center to its current location, as well as assisting with the renovation and preparations for opening. She also played a vital role in establishing our curation center from the ground up.

As a former librarian, Sandy brought exceptional organization and attention to detail. She meticulously documented and cataloged artifacts, assembled our library, and helped preserve the stories that make Aransas County's history so special. Her knowledge of local history was phenomenal, and she genuinely enjoyed sharing it with everyone she met.

One of Sandy's greatest joys was dressing in period costume for historical strolls and the annual Historic Home Tour, bringing history to life for our community. In recognition of her many contributions, she was honored with the Aransas County Historical Preservation Award.

We can never thank you enough, Sandy, for your dedication to preserving the history of Aransas County. Your passion, knowledge, and countless contributions helped shape the History Center into what it is today. Your legacy will continue to inspire all who follow in your footsteps, and you will be deeply missed.
