In “Celeste”, Nicholas Roes brings together material histories that feel both rural and contemporary.

The surface recalls traditional milk paint—long associated with practical, handmade finishes in country interiors—while sweeping chrome lacquer marks introduce an industrial shimmer. Set against a deep ultramarine field, the metallic gesture appears to lift and move across the canvas, creating a composition that feels airy, physical, and immediate.

Featured in the Remain Present exhibition, the work reflects Roes’s ongoing interest in how material, memory, and the artist’s hand remain visible within the painted surface.
