University of Rochester students are currently featured in Paris! 🇫🇷🧵

We’re excited to highlight Patchwork Collectif/Collective Patchwork Quilt, currently on view as part of Common Threads at the Fondation des États-Unis in Paris.

Created collaboratively by students in the University of Rochester’s Introduction to Fiber Art course and second year students in the Design, textile, et matière department at the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, the quilt brings together 22 individually designed textile squares under the theme Parcours de vie, or Life Journey.

For this quilt, each square approaches that theme from a different perspective, some pieces reflect on migration, cultural identity, and family history; others focus on childhood memories, travel, personal relationships, or everyday moments that have become meaningful over time. Together, these individual stories form one larger collective work, using patchwork as a way of connecting different personal histories across cultures.

The participating artists are Shaima Bel Hadaoui, Constance Bailleul, Lola Paulter, Valentine Challe, Ella (Bug) Cartwright, Maris Kelly, Alice Koskas, Kyan Grimm, Kate Zhao, Anita Pacini, Sokunpanha Ly, Tziporah Braun, Ziyu (Annie) Yan, Candice Billon, Elena Nguyen, Mica McCollough, Anuhya Vemagiri, Kevin He, Zichun Zhou, Amanda Lee, Rosalyn Li, and Aymée Mosselmans.

Thanks to our faculty artist in residence, Abbey Muza abbeymuza, for making this opportunity possible for our students🫶!

A closer look at “Multidimensional Perspectives” by Mizin Shin, artist and Associate Professor of Studio Arts at the University of Rochester.

Made from iridescent, laser-cut acrylic, this installation turns fractured networks into separate forms across the gallery wall. The material changes in color and appearance as viewers move around the space. Its shadows also shift with the light, creating new visual connections between the individual pieces.

By asking viewers to change their physical position, this piece shows how the same system can appear different depending on where we stand. The work challenges the idea that complex relationships can be understood from one fixed or linear point of view and presents perspective as something active, shaped by movement, distance, and our relationship to the surrounding space.

Visit “The Psychological Ledger” at ASIS Gallery through October 3!

The exhibition will then move to Hartnett Gallery, Wilson Commons, where it will remain on view through early November!

👀 Currently on view at ASIS Gallery: work by artist Mizin Shin.

Working primarily through printmaking and installation, Shin examines the systems that connect everyday objects, materials, and economies. Her work often focuses on interdependency: how individual things that seem unrelated are actually part of much larger social and industrial networks.
In Complexities, Shin traces the presence of corn throughout everyday consumer goods. Corn appears not only as a recognizable ingredient, but also as an invisible part of many industrial manufacturing processes. By mapping these connections, the work reveals how one familiar crop is embedded within a much larger structure of consumption and modern capitalism.

Continuing our look at Anne Muntges’ work currently on view at ASIS Gallery!

This second group of works called the 348 Franklin Street offers another view into Muntges’ detailed and immersive practice. Working across drawing, sculpture, and site specific installation, she uses thousands of carefully drawn ink lines to explore the hidden systems within our everyday environments. Moving between intimate, personal experiences and larger shared spaces, her work reflects on maintenance, privacy, survival, and endurance.

👀 Currently on view at ASIS Gallery: work by artist Anne Muntges! Anne Muntges

Working across drawing, sculpture, and site specific installation, Muntges explores the hidden systems that shape the spaces we inhabit. Through thousands of carefully drawn ink lines, she transforms everyday environments and overlooked systems of public maintenance into detailed, immersive worlds. Her work moves between the personal, the collective, and our reliance on the people and structures around us.
