✨At the end of August 1969, Reston Black Focus brought the community together for a celebration of Black culture, history, and creativity. This fantastic festival pamphlet is part of the Reston Museum’s collection.

The festival featured dancing, music, art, and great cuisine, reflecting the energy and diversity of Reston’s growing community. Reston Black Focus was founded to promote and celebrate Black culture and history in an integrated Reston, creating opportunities for connection, expression, and community.

While Reston's leaves are still green, dramatic fall colors are just around the corner! 🍂 This special Fall 1969 issue of Nature Newsnotes from the museum archives proves the Nature Center and its founders were true environmental trailblazers, advocating for tree preservation long before it became a mainstream public issue.

Vintage 1969 Tree Wisdom

Trees Spell Value: The newsletter reminded builders and architects that preserved trees increase property value while keeping homes naturally cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

Construction Protections: Saving native plants during development was recognized as serious work, requiring roped-off areas, protective fences, and a dedicated supervisor on every job site to follow through.

Old-School Resources: Need an arborist for tree surgery, cabling, or feeding? The guide charmingly directs residents straight to the yellow pages or to dial up the County Agent for home advice!

What is your favorite spot in Reston to watch the leaves change? 🌳✨

Almost sixty years ago, Lake Anne Elementary School opened its doors as the first new school built in Reston, hoping to channel the educational ideals that inspired the community. This archival welcome brochure highlights its historical significance as the first of 21 planned schools for the area. Today, as thousands of students, teachers, and staff prepare for the upcoming year, we proudly reflect on the generations taught here and the enduring legacy of education in Reston's schools.

What a day! 🚤🎉 A huge THANK YOU to our amazing Reston community (and new friends from Loudon and Greater Fairfax) for coming out, cheering on the boats, and embracing all the glorious cardboard chaos! We’re incredibly grateful to our generous sponsors, our fearless racing teams who willingly put themselves (and their cardboard creations) on the line, and our incredible volunteers who somehow managed to keep everything moving while the boats were falling apart. 😂 This event truly takes a village, and we couldn’t do it without all of you. We also couldn’t help but think about Bob Simon throughout the day. We know Bob would have absolutely loved watching this wonderfully weird Reston tradition come to life, probably with a big smile, a good story, and a few suggestions for making the boats even more seaworthy. Thank you all for making this year’s Regatta one to remember! ❤️🚤
