While we may not have the holy grail, we do have an important communion cup! This communion cup was a gift from John Wesley to Francis Asbury in 1785.

Asbury (1745-1816) is known to be the father of American Methodism. He was sent over to America by Wesley to spread Methodism in the “New World”. Then, he became the first American Bishop and the pastor at St. George’s.

Wesley (1703-1791) is known to be the founder of the Methodist Movement. Wesley sent over the chalice from England in 1785 to use as a communion cup at St. George’s.

Did you know that St. George’s has a hymn? In 1869, F***y Crosby wrote a hymn for the church in honor of our centennial.

F***y Jane Crosby (March 24, 1820- February 12, 1915) is a famous hymn writer. She contracted an illness in infancy which left her permanently blind. She was an advocate for the education of blind individuals and a devout Christian. She attended several different Methodist churches in her life. Throughout her life, she wrote many poems and hymns discussing her faith, her experiences as a blind individual, and other events in her life. She is credited to have written between 5,000-9,000 hymns by her death in 1915.

“Old St. George’s” was a hymn written for the churches 100 year anniversary of dedication on November 24, 1869. The hymn is 5 versus, has four lines, and is in the meter 8.8.8.8 D.
