Just when you thought you knew everything about Philadelphia, it turns out The City of Brotherly Love has a treasure you may not have uncovered. The National Liberty Museum is known as one of Philly’s hidden gems. The Museum, located in Old City, examines liberty in a whole new way through world-class collections of glass art and innovative exhibits that showcase artists, visionaries and activists

who exercise their freedom of expression every day. You’ll find stories of hundreds of heroes, past and present, who have protected and expanded our liberties, including heroes from our own backyard. Most of all, our exhibits will help you reflect on your own experience of freedom and awaken your desire to “LIVE LIKE A HERO.”

In addition to welcoming general visitors, we offer guided tours and workshops for school groups, unique professional development workshops for educators, and an array of exciting evening events for artists, collectors and the everyday Philadelphian. You can even nominate exceptional teachers, students, police offers and firefighters for one of our Hero Awards.

Thank you to everyone who joined us last night for Project Bus Stop: A Design Challenge for Philadelphia! And a special thank you to our student designers and panelists Ulysses Sean Vance, Inga Saffron, Ryan Devlin, Keely Milbourne, Peng Du, and Jeffrey S. Nesbit for leading such an important discussion on the challenges of Philadelphia's transportation infrastructure, and how the design community can influence and address these challenges to create a bus system that is accessible to everyone. These types of conversations expand on liberty as a step toward action, which is the core of our mission, and we are so grateful to host an event on such an important topic!

We are excited to announce the addition of Inga Saffron, architecture critic for Philadelphia Inquirer, as a panelist for our upcoming event, Project Bus Stop: A Design Challenge for Philadelphia with Ulysses Sean Vance. Joining them on the panel are also Temple University Architecture Professors Jeffrey S Nesbit and Ryan Devlin, along with keely milbourne (Haverford College) and Peng Du (Jefferson University). The event features a panel discussion of design submissions to Project Bus Stop, a public challenge to Philadelphia’s design community to consider the significance of public transportation infrastructure in the city.

Prompted by the recent closure and relocation of the Greyhound Bus Terminal, Project Bus Stop solicited ideas from students, faculty, designers, and regional firms on how to create a new urban ecology for bus transportation in Philly’s downtown area.

Submissions from the competition will be on display throughout the evening, and guests will have the opportunity to explore the museum’s galleries, including our latest exhibition, Project Liberty: A Design Challenge, which applies design thinking to resolving everyday challenges.

The event is pay-what-you-wish and a part of DesignPhiladelphia. Visit https://www.libertymuseum.org/event/project-bus-stop-a-design-challenge-for-philadelphia-with-ulysses-sean-vance/ to learn more and register!

Capping off the Museum's three-year exploration of the concept and practice of liberty today, Project Liberty opens next Friday, exploring liberty through design thinking and hands-on interactives. Shifting perspectives between “me” and “we”, visitors will collaborate to find solutions to real-world issues, and tackle the question, “How do we create liberty for all?”

As part of the exhibition, the Liberty Learning Lab will be transformed into a collaborative studio space, where visitors can dive deep into topics ranging from gun violence to environmental sustainability. Project Liberty aims to be more than an exhibition - it is an experience that fosters a solution oriented mindset.

Calling all artists! Artwork submissions are now open for our winter exhibition, celebrating music as an expression of liberty. The exhibition, opening January 5, will showcase a small, diverse group of artists whose work considers music and performance as positive forces for liberty and equality, and as platforms for individual and community empowerment.

Selected artworks should discuss music as both a form of expression and as an experience. Works should consider music’s capacity to offer social commentary, amplify voices that have gone unheard, and reimagine or even reinforce cultural boundaries.
