Old City Jewish Arts Center Using the arts as a springboard, the JAC advances and promotes the universal messages of Judaism. The center hosts a Art exhibition which changes each month.

Founded in 2006, the OCJAC was envisioned as a platform to build community through the arts. Building steadily since then, the OCJAC gallery has become an exhibition space for serious artists, holds monthly "First Friday" art receptions with a Jewish twist and provides social and Jewish holiday programs throughout the year. OCJAC is now a landmark gallery in the Philadelphia art scene, and is the

only gallery dedicated to Jewish artistic expression and cultural exchange in Philadelphia. Using the arts as a springboard, the Old City Jewish Art Center advances and promotes the universal messages of Judaism & spiritually to the broadest possible audience. In addition, we feature a variety of other activities, including:

•First Friday Receptions & Shabbos Dinners.
•Classes and Workshops
•Musical Programs and Concerts

“Feminine Instinct” runs from September 1, 2023 to September 28, 2023 with First Friday on September first from 5-9 pm followed by a community Shabbat Complimentary Dinner 9pm, and the Artists Reception on Sunday September 10th from 12 noon to 2pm. All are invited and welcome.

Feminine Instinct: A Collaboration of 13 Female Artists at the Old City Jewish Art Center

Thirteen female artists have collaborated in launching “Feminine Instinct,” the newest exhibit at the Old City Jewish Art Center (OCJAC). The art expresses the feminine creative power we all hold inside and the primal and intuitive voice that speaks directly to our physical being; it is the voice that determines our survival and that of our partners, our families, our nation, our species, and our planet!

As female artists, they discovered that paying attention to that inner voice permeates all of their work and that their work is part of their being. Some of the work touches on disparities between genders, others illustrate the dissolving of preconceived notions of identity, yet others consider how feminine and masculine principles balance each other. Works on exhibit contain messages about historical archetypes and cultural stereotypes regarding the roles of women in society.
While these stereotypes have shaped societal expectations and perceptions of women, and at times limited their roles and potential, embracing them also empowers women to reclaim their narratives and redefine their place in society. The recent popularity of the arts among women and the greater appreciation of female artists have made it possible for these artists to express themselves openly through art. By using feminine instincts, by listening to their inner voices, and by embracing their intuition, they have been able to create stunning and thought-provoking works for this exhibit.

Participating artists include: Marlene Adler, Cindy Boughton, Reena Brooks, Laura Demme, Rochele Dinkin, Nicole Dul, Maxine Feldman, Felise Luchansky, Debora Meltz, Diana Myers, Colleen O’Donnell, Deb Wagner, and Lois Yampolsky. They are of both local and national renown. The exhibit is highly eclectic, showcasing diverse media including: paintings, sculptures, prints, collages, assemblages and ceramics. Because traditionally, women had to be resourceful to fulfill domestic tasks, many of the works depict feminine resourcefulness in material utilization. Recycled materials, decoration, and domestic handicrafts like weaving and embroidery will all be featured in some of the items on display.
