POV: it's Unity Day with the Grand Lodges of Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Puerto Rico at the Masonic Temple! For many visitors, it was not only their first time seeing the building in person, but also conducting Masonic degree work in our historic lodge rooms. All the lodge rooms in the Masonic Temple are based on a theme or style of some kind, and Oriental Hall is no exception. In our Exhibit Hall, you can view a display (pictured) of the model section of the Alhambra Shrine from the late 19th century. The decorations of Oriental Hall are modeled after the interior of the Shrine. The Alhambra is an exquisite palace and fortress complex located in Granada, Spain. It is one of the most famous monuments of Islamic architecture and one of the best-preserved palaces of the historic Islamic world.

While not an art museum, we have many unique artworks in our collection - like this custom-made butterfly-wing art with common Masonic symbols. Popular with South American indigenous artists in the late 19th to mid-20th centuries, sailors and tourists brought butterfly-wing trays, pictures and jewelry home after their travels. The piece shown came from Sao Paulo, Brazil and was a gift to Brother Clarence Baldwin, WM, Lodge No. 3. The butterfly wings are inlaid under glass and the symbols painted on.

Did you know you can get married at the Masonic Temple through ONE North Broad, the event-planning arm of the Masonic Temple?

People magazine highlighted the Masonic Temple as a wedding venue in an article about the New Year’s Eve wedding of “The Bachelor: Listen to Your Heart" alum and former Miss Philadelphia Julia Rae and Matt Lucido. The couple exchanged vows "while surrounded by magnificent architecture inside Corinthian Hall," sipped cocktails under the stars in the Foyer and danced the night away in the Grand Ballroom. "It was better than anything I could’ve ever imagined," the bride gushed.

Today we celebrate St. John the Evangelist Day, also known as Feast Day, with a display in our Exhibit Hall through Jan. 2! Traditionally, on St. John The Evangelist Day, Freemasons meet for a meal to celebrate the winter solstice, representing the world becoming less dark and leaning more towards the light. St. John the Evangelist, also known as the Beloved Apostle, wrote about God’s relationship with light and how it represents the educational journey for Freemasons, which is why he is such an important figure. St. John is symbolized for his devotion to brotherly love, charity, truth and enduring integrity, all important tenets of Freemasonry. Click through to photos to see the images on display.

We're recognizing one South Carolina Freemason's contribution to holiday decorating - and botany - in the Grand Foyer. Brother Joel R. Poinsett, PM, Recovery Lodge No. 31, Greenville, and Solomon's Lodge No. 1, Charleston, and Past Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Ancient Free Masons of South Carolina, is credited with bringing the plant from its native Mexico into the United States. He was also instrumental in getting Freemasonry more established in Mexico, including helping form the York Grand Lodge of Mexico and introducing Royal Arch Freemasonry to the country. Check out the display, which includes an oil painting of him from our museum collection, on your next visit!
