On June 11th, we lost a titan of art: David Hockney. 🕊️

As a towering figure of the Pop Art movement and one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century, Hockney visualized the world in such a kaleidoscopic way.

He captured the essence of modern life with an unmistakable brilliance, bold color choices, and experimental perspective.

We recently completed a commission that was directly influenced by Hockney and his deep, years-spanning friendship with the famed printmaker Kenneth Tyler.

You see, collector and friend Fariel happens to live in Tyler’s former home in Westchester, New York.

This is the home where Tyler and Hockney spent hours and hours ideating, flowing, and bonding—each hour adding texture, color, and depth to their relationship.

To our delight, Fariel had photographs of the two in her home: discussing Hockney’s pieces, standing on her roof looking down at the swimming pool next door, simply enjoying each other’s energy.

Fariel came to Teal Canvas to commission a piece that would pay homage to Hockney and his style, using these incredible archival photographs as the reflection point.

As a fan of Hockney, and an artist whose own vibrant color choices and fascinating sense of movement are influenced by Hockney's work, artist Rodger Schultz was the perfect choice to bring this vision to life.

Witnessing their wide-ranging conversations concerning art, presence, time, and the profound meaning art plays in a life well lived was just such a pleasure.

I founded Teal Canvas out of an immense appreciation for the arts.

It is, quite frankly, a miracle that humans have the ability to create something so unique to their vision. And then an equal miracle, the ability for that art to move people, to spur conversation, and to interpret the world through a singular lens.

Teal Canvas is in the visual arts space, but I have an equal love for music.

And that is why I'm so proud to introduce you to Lydia Cash. Her visual work is beautiful, saturated with color, depth, and movement.

Lydia’s new album dropped today. It's lovely, it's fuzzy, it's vulnerable; it's a bit of nostalgia and yet so modern. Truly all the things you could want in an album.

I highly encourage you to explore her visual work. And while you are doing so, give her “Violet” a listen.

I love the idea of the story. 📖

We are all just a collection of stories—lived in, experienced, made up, self-imposed. All of our stories combine to make us who we are, the narrative thread, the totality of our lives. It’s all just stories.

Which brings me to a recent install. The story of it.

I love the work of both Antoinette Wysocki nd Jenny Reinhardt individually—as artists and as incredibly generous humans. They both work with the stories of life, placing the passions, the memories, and the collector’s history into their pieces.

Visual diaries.

For this residential project, the collectors, Lindsay and Adam, were so generous in sharing their own stories with us. They commissioned both Antoinette and Jenny for the entrance to their beautiful home.

Each piece holds fragments of their life—from places they love, to hints of their children, to the signature of a cherished father who has passed. All these stories of lives well lived, and lives that continue to live well.

These two pieces sync in space. Jenny’s sculptural hallway piece and Antoinette’s landing mixed media piece dance together so beautifully. Each individually resonant, and each hand in hand with the other.

There is a tether from Lindsay and Adam to each artist, the artists to each other, and everyone to me and Teal Canvas. Just an incredible honor.

I love this story. I love to tell stories through art. I love the idea of stories.

And I would be remiss to not offer huge gratitude to Jaclyn Isaac of Doni Douglas Design for trusting us with this project. She is as talented as she is collaborative as she is passionate as she is kind. I'm grateful that she is now part of my story as well. ✨

“There is beauty in the breakdown” - Frou Frou

Wednesday night was incredible. One of those quick NYC trips where everything comes together so well. You know when time seems to speed up, or stop, or do what time does. I’m now more convinced than ever that time is elastic.

A beautiful night. And then…. The breakdown.

The 6:30 AM train back to Philly only to jump in the car with my family for a 6-hour drive down to Southern Virginia. A little worse for wear, a little hungover. Echoes of a memorable night lingering.

Once we arrived, our little Gigi was so excited to see her cousins. Sprinting, she fell and completely split her lip. That "once you hear it you know it" banshee cry. Blood gushing. Clothes red. To this dad, heartbreak.

Last night, she just wouldn’t sleep. I’m sure that lip throbbed. Everyone exhausted on this rainy, chilly Friday.

But then this morning, Gigi looked up at me with those big, beautiful eyes, and that swollen, puffy top lip (the kind that some people pay good money for), and said, “My lip is okay, Daddy.”

She then gave me a nose kiss.

Sometimes, things just break down. And that’s okay. There is something deeply beautiful in the breakdown. It makes us beautifully human.

This is why I love art. It can be optimistic, vibrant, and viewed in the major key. But it can also be a bit more somber, melancholic, and minor key.

This piece by Elijah Mcneeley. It’s Wabi-Sabi. It’s mysterious. It’s a long drive and a puffy lip. It's a sleepy, rainy morning (I think you'd love it )

There is just so much beauty in the breakdown. And then again, the come up. 📈

I saved a cow’s life yesterday.

I took my family to a farm. Fresh produce, animal petting, all the flowers, all the dust. You get the idea.

While feeding the cows through a thin wire fence, one of them got its head stuck. Like, really stuck. Panic, labored breathing, no chance he gets unstuck

I usually live with various degrees of analysis paralysis. Maybe you do to?

But at this moment, even though it was fairly intimidating with his massive mouth thrashing around, I managed to dislodge his head from the wire.

Freed, he walked away unceremoniously. He gave me a little side-eye. Just back to eating in the shade.

Both disrespect and heroism in play.

Afterwards, my friend Larry noticed how I sprung into action. He said, "Do more of that." He’s a wise one.

I knew what he meant. In business, in life, in art, in design, one can spend so much time over-calculating the "fence." I could have analyzed the wire until the cow was a pile of bones, but instincts took over.

Heart instead of head. Decisive. And then walk away a bovine hero.

Trust your Gutnick, Gutnick.

Representing over 100 world-class artists, I am so fortunate to witness such captivating work every single day. I am surrounded by immense talent. ✨

And, sometimes, I come across an artist whose work I immediately appreciate. It just offers something a bit different. Maybe you know this feeling? You can't explain it, you just know you are a fan. 🍷

That’s Claire Haynes .m.haynes for me right now.

I was just in a meeting with a high-end NYC architecture and design firm. Their showroom is sophisticated, high standard, beautiful. When I showed them Claire’s work, the reaction was immediate (more on this partnership to come!)

They were looking for pieces to feature in their showroom and Claire's work was immediately spotlighted.

What I love about Claire’s work is how intriguing it feels. There’s a resonance to her subjects.

Figurative portraiture is more than a frozen moment. It's a motion capture. You can imagine what the subject was doing before and after that singular snapshot. The richenss of their lives. Or perhaps the opposite. It's a story.

Teal Canvas is so excited to be part of Claire’s journey as her career starts to skyrocket. If you’re an art lover or a collector who likes to be early, Claire Haynes is a name to remember.

The Art of James Harvey (stop scrolling, this is just so cool!) ✨

James Harvey's work moves with the elements. Yes, actually. 🌬️

He suspends moments in time using multiple layers of transparent organdy, the sheerest of cottons, known for its stiff, lightweight, and ethereal texture, and ink.

This one-of-one aesthetic was born from a deeply personal recovery following a severe concussion, where James began to see the world in overlapping, flickering images.

When we talk with artists (and we talk with a lot of artists), a common theme is the ability to translate a vision of the world onto a canvas. In James' case, this is meant in the most literal way possible.

He began constructing these installations exactly as his mind was translating visual senses. Now, you can find them in high-end residences and commercial spaces worldwide.

Cabell is officially embracing her "senior" status today (don't blame us for the word, Cabell embraces it!), but as you can see from this incredible studio reel, her spirit and her art are more vibrant and playful than ever.

Art, Appetite, and Impact in Philadelphia (and a chance for you to make a difference!) 🎨🍽️❤️

Back in February, the Philadelphia's culinary world gathered for The Tasties—a night created by the visionary to celebrate the incredible achievements of Philly's chefs and restaurateurs. 🥂

But the evening was about more than just accolades; it was a powerful fundraiser for Philadelphia’s largest hunger-relief organization.

The Live Experience:
Teal Canvas was honored to contribute to the energy of the evening. We brought in the brilliant to paint live. It's always so incredible to watch a master of their craft in real time.

Rodger captured the energy, movement, and soul of the kitchen in real-time, finishing the work back in his studio to create this masterpiece: "The Kitchen". 🖼️✨
