Westbury House was built on a man-made rise so it was visible from all areas of the formal gardens. The greatness of the landscape design is the relation of structures and plantings in creating a pleasing composition in all four seasons.

During times like these, we are reminded that as much as the world around us changes, Old Wesbtury Gardens remains an enduring sanctuary for us all, and we eagerly await when we can be together again. Today we would have been hosting our Annual Gardeners’ Fair Gala here at Old Westbury Gardens. We would be celebrating this glorious spring season with longtime friends and supporters on this picture-perfect day. Please mark your calendars for September 12th, our new date for Gardeners’ Fair. We are working hard to deliver a unique experience for this prestigious event. Until then, we will be swooning over memories from last year’s gala honoring @tomsamet and Chaired by @annebyers #wemissyou #wewishyouwerehere #ourfavoritetimeofyear #thepartywillgoon #staysafe #seeyousoon

Baby Snapping Turtle at Old Westbury Gardens

Slow and steady, a great motto for our current times! This baby snapping turtle took its time crossing our lawns to reach the East Lake. No need to rush as these freshwater turtles can live to be more than 100 years old!

Historic photographs help us understand how landscapes and buildings change over time. The 1916 aerial view is one of the earliest of the grounds and the 1906 photo provides important data on construction techniques, especially for the restoration of the Collyweston slate roof on Westbury House.

Three sets of gates welcome you into the Walled Garden. The north and east gates were restored by the firm that worked on the Statue of Liberty. It is typical that pieces of 18th c metalwork are integrated into the newer components.
