The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County is the pre-eminent Holocaust resource on Long Island, with a contemporary museum, and is one of the largest and most comprehensive education program providers in the region. Since 2007, nearly 250,000 students, teachers, employers and law enforcement personnel have participated in the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center’s education p

rograms. The Claire Friedlander Education Institute features four fully equipped classrooms with state-of–the-art audio-visual aids and cutting edge technical equipment for specialized video-conferencing programs and a wide variety of workshops for students, adults, law enforcement personnel and staff development for educators and other professionals. With the Louis Posner Memorial Library, the Center offers over 7,000 volumes of Holocaust, genocide, multicultural, anti-bias and anti-bullying material for youth and adults, from Kindergarten through post-graduate researchers.

This episode highlight’s Nikhil’s work as a student docent in his school’s annual Holocaust Remembrance Day program, a leading in the Breaking Borders program, and as a board member for Remember Liss. Together, Nikhil and Zachary discuss the importance of Holocaust education in schools today, and the benefit of having positive role models in your life who encourage you to be curious about the world around you.

On this day, we remember the courageous prisoner uprising at the Treblinka Extermination Camp. In an extraordinary act of resistance, hundreds of prisoners risked everything in a revolt against their captors. While many were killed, dozens escaped, ensuring that the truth of Treblinka, and the atrocities committed there, would not be silenced.

Today, we honor their extraordinary bravery, remember the victims who perished, and reaffirm our commitment to preserving their stories.

May their courage never be forgotten.

Wishing a very happy 95th birthday to local Holocaust survivor Rosalie Lebovic Simon, born on this day in 1931 in Kriva Velka, Czechoslovakia.

Rosalie was just eleven years old when she was expelled from school, and twelve years old when her family was removed from their home and deported to the Mátészalka ghetto. From there, she and her family were transported to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where her brother and mother were murdered upon arrival. Rosalie miraculously survived numerous brushes with death, thanks to the empathy of strangers and the help of her dear older sisters. Rosalie and her sisters were liberated by the American Army just a short distance from ditches intended to be their final resting place.

Today, Rosalie remains committed to sharing her experiences with people of all ages, ensuring that the memories the over six million Jews murdered by the N***s, including her mother and brother, are never forgotten. We are eternally grateful to Rosalie and are honored to celebrate her today and always

In episode 487 of Education in Motion, Dr. Janet Bond Brill joins HMTC Director of Education Zachary Graulich to speak about her publication “Little Edna’s War”, the true story of Holocaust survivor Edna Szurek, Dr. Brill’s mother in-law.

“Little Edna’s War” chronicles Edna’s loss of freedom with the invasion of the N***s, and the bravery she endlessly exhibited in the ensuing years. At just seven years old, Edna Szurek found herself imprisoned alongside her family in the Warsaw Ghetto. As a child providing for her family, Edna put everything on the line, slipping food through gaps in the walls of the Warsaw Ghetto despite the constant threat of death. At just 10 years old, she became the youngest decorated member of the Polish resistance. By the war’s end, she had survived and overcome every attempt by the N***s to erase her.

84 years ago today, German SS and police began two months of heavy deportations from the Warsaw Ghetto. The “Great Deportation” as it became know resulted in roughly 265,000 Jews being forcibly placed into freight cars and deported to the Treblinka killing center where they were all murdered upon arrival. About 35,000 more Jews were killed inside the ghetto during the summer of 1942. It was the single largest deportation action of the Holocaust.

The Great Deportation became inspiration for the surviving Jews of the Warsaw ghetto to rise up in the greatest act of rebellion during the Holocaust: the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

Today, we reflect on the cruelty and inhumanity demonstrated during the Holocaust, and remember the 300,000 Jews that were murdered during the Great Deportation.
